Topic: Has this happened to you? Posted: 15 November 2010 at 2:02pm |
Today we had our anatomy scan and the sonographer had a bit of difficulty finding the sex. In the end she told us that she was 80% sure that we are having a girl (yay!). It was a little anti-climatic though not being completely sure. Has this happened to you, but you ended up having the right gender?
Just not sure whether to buy any pink outfits!
TIA

I think they were the odds we had for Fay being a girl too and she definitely is one, as girly as they come.
Re buying the pink stuff, I think that's down to your choice really, I boughtr a couple of bits and pieces of pink but we had decieded to keep quiet to everyone else

At Lilia's scan the sonographer was 90% sure she was a girl, and she was! I know we were given higher 'odds' than you, but I understand what you mean about it being a little anti-climatic.

They normally only go with 80% odds i thought. To save there bum if they are wrong.
But 80% is pretty good. Id say you are having a girl

Throughout the pregnancy I've had strong feelings that it was a girl (and my mum is convinced!) so I would be surprised if it did end up being a boy. No less stoked though.
Edited to add: Good idea keeping it to yourself Redbedrock. Wish I had thought of that earlier.....

haha, at my scan with my first they said "its more likely to be a girl " not even a percent ......scan at 30 weeks showed the "hamburger" and yup, 9 years later I can say she is definetly a girl
This baby at both 16 weeks and 19 the sonographer said DEFINETLY a girl, and when I asked him he said he was 100 percent certain, which should be good enough for me, and even tho I feel its a girl, I still want to triple check haha .....didn't have this issue with Ty ,there was no mistaking that third bit between the legs

Are you able to be offered another scan? My friend's baby hid but her mw referred her for another scan (twice because it hid!) once at 24 weeks and again at 32.

the sonographer said to us that she was 'fairly' sure it was a girl - 99% but she is normally 99.9% apparently - babe had her legs crossed the whole time, very firmly! we tried not to think of babe as a 'she' (and failed miserably!) but it didnt matter because it turned out that she was in fact a wee girly

My friends were told they were having a boy and had a girl.
At our 20 week scan the sonographer wasn't very good, kept having to get someone else in to 'check' things. She said that she thinks the baby is a boy, but I am not convinced as she didn't sound very sure at all. So I guess I will have to wait a week or two to find out for sure!!
I think it is more common for them to say it is a girl, and it end up being a boy, rather than the other way around though.

Thanks all. I don't think I'll ask for another scan, but I remember that my mw said that she will refer me later on before birth to check position etc so can always double check then. TBH, I already have a cool boy and would be quite happy to have another, but I do feel strongly that it is a girl so am happy to go with that instinct. Besides, my mum is convinced it's a girl and she's usually right!

Hi - not sure if this is helpful or unhelpful !! BUT it can't help to have a another example for comparison - my sonographer is absolutely certain I am going to have a girl - she is a family friend so she said there is no way she would want to get it wrong because she wouldn’t live it down she checked about 4 times just to make sure.

At my 20wk scan the sonographer forgot to check, so as she was finishing up I asked her about it, and she was really slack, had a quick glance and basically said "nope cant tell". I was really upset and even after explaining to my midwife and my GP how upset I was - they wouldnt refer me for another scan until 28wks. So NEXT WEEK we are going for another scan, fingers crossed its easy to tell this time! I am not leaving until I know!!!!!!!

That's what happened with us MF - she said, 'last picture' and then I had to say, 'can we find out what it is please' and by then the baby (who had been in a perfect position) decided to cover everything up! Good luck with next week's scan!

I can't believe thats not the first thing the sonographer looks for. I would!! Lucky I'm not in that profession ay.
I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo gutted when we couldn't find out with DD. I had two scans with no luck.
It better not happen this time!

At our 20w scan it was towards the end and she said do you want to know, I asked if she knew (I thought I had seen the 3 lines for a girl, although DH was going to find out and I wasnt) and she said no, when she did look at that area I didnt see anything. Turns out DD is a girl I think they are actually too busy making sure everything else is doing its thing to worry if its a girl or boy...
The sonographer wouldnt write it on a piece of paper though since nothing is ever certain I thought that was the perfect solution to us not knowing if we wanted to find out or not!

I've heard some scanners won't play the 'put the gender in the envelope' game. I was going to have them write it down and give it to the father for xmas but i would have ruined the suprise myself anyway. I still like the idea though

Oh I was thinking of getting them to put the gender in an envelope (if we don't find out) to send to my friend in America, but maybe I won't ask...
Anyway with DD the scanner didn't give us odds, just said "it's a girl" and pointed out the girl bits. He didn't seem to have any doubt about it! (And yup she's a girl hehe)
Still not decided if we'll find out this time or not...

I guess while we are all really excited to find out what flavour we are having we have to remember that that the point of the scan is to check everything is ok and the sonographer is doing a really important job that they need to be concentrating on.
