Topic: Reducing number of bottle feeds Posted: 20 December 2010 at 2:28pm |
DD is nearly 1 and is on 3 solid meals + snacks + 3 240ml bottles per day -she rarely finishes the bottles so I am wondering when do we reduce the number of bottles per day and to how much??
I am in the process of trying to wean her onto finger foods but with only four teeth it is taking longer and she is quite fussy.
Any tips on that would be great as well!
Thanks

The number of teeth has nothing to do with them eating finger foods, my dd has no teeth and manages all types of finger food just fine.
Could you perhaps swap one of the bottles for water?
Also how much water does she drink, and does she drink water with her meals to? How much?

She drinks water with every meal & has further drinks during the day.
I am unsure what I should be giving her for lunches etc? Dinner I struggle with as dp works nights so I an home alone, I get home from work, then need to feed & bath her before I get a chance to get anything sorted for myself :(

I would just test one day giving her a bottle of water instead of milk, or maybe a little less milk at that feed if you can (not sure with formula?)
re lunches, I just make sandwiches with different fillings, or something about the shape of your index finger (veges or fruit) basically they just have to be able to mush it against the roof of their mouth in terms of how soft.

I was quite worried about how I was going to cut out the extra bottle and couldn't figure it out but it's dropped out as naturally as all the others. Now she'll very nearly drain her morning and night bottle (250ml cows milk) instead of drinking maybe 150ml of each one. Don't worry just yet, it'll happen

And babies need 500ml max of milk after the age of one so whether that's made up of 2 or 3 bottles really depends on your baby

Also Plunket has a sheet with different examples of finger foods that are ok to give, just having a look some examples are:
mandarin, kiwifruit, rice crackers, peach slices, pears, rice biscuits, bread sticks, raisins, sandwiches, pasta, cheese, peas, apple, cucumber, processed cheese, fish fingers, crackers, seedless grapes (halved), dried apricots, grated cheese, mouse traps (which judging by the pic looks like toast slice cut into 3 or 4 strips with marmite), avocado, prunes, pineapple rings, gruit biscuits, banana, broccoli, celery, carrots, nectarine, luncheon, cheese slices, orange...
Lily's had everything off that list and sometimes we have last night's left over dinner heated up.

Thanks everyone
I have tried her on Avocado, strawberries, mango - she is not overly fond of those.
She loves toast and cruskits with marmite so might just make her some sandwiches.
She has started having yoghurt and loves it so that will make lunches a bit easier.
It is really just dinners - I think I might try her on some steamed veges for dinner tonight - should I still give her her usual jar food as well jus to make sure she is getting enough??

You could give her a jar of food and feed about 75% and let her try spoon feed the rest, or you could feed her the jar and let her try feed herself the steamed veges or whatever you make while you guys eat.
We do BLW, so DD has exactly what we eat, just a smaller portion for her. Last week I did steamed red cod seasoned with lemon and dill and steamed carrots, courgettes, potato, orange kumara and broccoli and she ate the lot! Have put some pics up in the BLW photo album if you want to have a nosey at what others give their babies, pretty much imo once you start finger foods it's like BLW.

Thanks Nicole
I was wondering if it might be a bit late to start but I guess you got to start sometime!
Plunket were no help when I mentioned BLW - they had no idea what I was talking about!
The plan I have now is when we eat she will have what we have, I have some jars in reserve for breakfasts or when we are out and about but I really want her getting more "real" food :)

I'm not sure when Plunket recommends finger foods, it's about 9mo isn't it?
My PN didn't know what I was talking about either but she was glad at the 9mo check that DD was eating finger foods.
So far I've found it to be just trial and error. We haven't had any choking or gagging yet. And I've found they're more interested if they see you doing it too

this is true!
Whenever we are eating she sits there saying "ta"
Super cute but a pain when you are trying to eat your breakfast and she ends up eating half of it!
