Topic: going off the pill and periods Posted: 23 February 2011 at 6:36pm |
Hi there
As some of you know I have gone off the pill. This is my first period and I was just wondering when it will ever end! Usually mine last 4 days max on pill, this is day 6 and its still going! would love to know other peoples experiences when going off the pill and how long it took for your periods to get back to normal!

Hi popcorn,
Yay for going off the pill!
Personally my first period off the pill was just the same as it had been before and it hasn't really changed too much over the past 16mths. Mine came within 28days of stopping as well.
I realise that probably doesn't help much but I think everyone's bodies are different and react differently to the pill. Might also depend on what pill you'd been on? Not sure.
Good luck in your journey and hope it buggers off soon.

Hi Popcorn,
I hate to say it, but one of the side effects of the pill can be shorter, lighter periods, so it may just be that the 6-day+ period is your normal period. What was your period like before you went on the pill?
How long it takes for your cycle to regulate after coming off the pill varies hugely from person to person I'm afraid. For me, I had one short cycle, and then got pg on my second cycle, but others it can take a long time to even get their period back.
Fingers crossed you get UTD next cycle and then you don't have to worry about the next period

Popcorn, my first period after coming off the pill was crazy.... but the ones after that have been fine...
My period was 'normal' and then it was like my body recognised it wasn't getting the pill when it should have and that's when it went weird...
So I was normal with my fifth day being very light, then next day was medium and then day seven was light again and day eight was nothing in the morning, absolutely nothing, then at lunchtime I stood up and passed a massive clot!!! And I had no 'protection' on as there was nothing in the morning!!!! So I had to go commando that day at work!!!! Day after that was same, nothing in morning, nothing at lunch then at 4pm was clots!!! Day after was same except got clots at 8pm, and that was the end of it - very very very weird and long - 10 days - and I was nothing like that before I went on the pill....
Since then my periods have gotten a bit lighter and a lot shorter, so now the normal is 4/5 days and a day of spotting afterwards...

my body hated me when i came off the pill...my artificial 28 day cyles became very short, i would be 'on' for 10-14days and off for 14 days then back 'on' again and then after 6months they sorted themselves out to 14days of AF and i would have CD40+ annovulatory cycles.
i then got an mirena IUD and have 'normal 28 day cycles'

i didnt get regular periods at all and they got further and further apart until i was diagnosed with PCOS. i now have a gorgeous baby girl tho after a bit of treatment
just remember tho that while you are on the pill you dont actually get a proper period- its jsut the levels of hormones being controlled by the pill, and when you have your sugar pill week the levels drop and thats what gives you your period..also the pill often makes your bleeds shorter and lighter than if your body were doing it itself.. it can take months for your body to get into a regular pattern again, and for some people they go back to what is "normal" for them straight away. also, how long have you been on the pill for? even tho your periods were different before going on the pill, if you have been on the pill a few years your body might just have changed- eg: the kind of periods you had as a teen are often very different to the ones you have when in your 20's, 30's etc.. your "normal" might just have changed since your body last had to ovulate and have a period all by itself! good luck hun hope your TTC journey is short and sweet! x x x

Hi ladies
Thanks for the handy info! :)
I've just stopped taking the pill after being on it for around 9 / 10 years. Yesterday was the last day of my 'pill' period, so now I guess I'm just waiting for my first 'normal' one to return.
Planning on TTC#1 around June if all goes to plan.
I can't remember what my period was like before the pill, so it's kinda annoying not knowing what to expect.
I hope it doesn't take too long to sort itself out!

Hi All
Just thought I would share my expierience so far. I came of the pill on 01st December 10, this was followed by 6 weeks of no period and then a 10day period. Since the I have on and off bleeding sometimes every few days for 3-4 days and sometimes it stops for up to two weeks then comes back for a few days etc. I guess all our bodys react differentally to coming of the pill. Hopefully mine comes right soon, really thought I would be having a 2011 baby but guess not by the way things are going. But will keep hoping it happens soon.

I have been on the pill for 12 years. I chose to finish out my pill packets rather than just stopping (wanted to "close that chapter", IYKWIM. Thursday a week a go is the day I start taking the sugar pills (although I didn't, I just took nothing), Monday I got my pill period, Thursday would be the day I would start taking the next strip (but I didn't) and today, Saturday, is the day I would normally finish my pill period (although normally it would be nothing much). But this time, Friday was normal Saturday, expect that late in the afternoon I got awful period pain, but just in my lower back (cramping and such). It lasted about an hour, although after about half an hour I took some neurofen and that seemed to fix it. I'm really nervous about my cycle now!

I came off the pill in April 2010 and was worried about what my cycles would do too. I had been on the pill for a couple of years that time around so expected a bit of a wait for things to get back to normal. Luckily enough I got a period within about 28 days and they have been regular ever since. Obviously we are still TTC since starting properly in July 2010 and I guess my thoughts are now on whether there is lingering effects from the pill (or maybe I am just trying to find something to blame for not being UTD yet!! )
I hope your cycles even themselves out soon, and you all get your BFP's in the near future! Oh and 2012 babies are going to be very cool!

I came off in September and had AF within a few days. Think I recognised OV as well! But now currently on CD 50 waiting for AF to show up again. Really hoped I'd be one of the lucky ones with normal cycles! Good luck, I really hope yours go back to normal asap :-/

Thanks, I am worried as I have been on the pill for nearly 12 years, have stopped taking it and have had no sign of a period at all. I had light to no periods at all on the pill, and hope this hasn't affected my body too much, I guess only time will tell.
