    Posted: 28 February 2011 at 4:18pm
So, I'm keen to put my 14-month-old girl in daycare for a few hours a day a couple of days a week so that I can work. I work from home and would like to get some more work, but realistically there is only so much I can get done at naptime and in the evenings. The whole point of me working from home is so that she doesn't have to go to daycare, so I don't want to do more than a couple of hours, just somewhere for her to go and play a couple of times a week.

Any suggestions? Daycare seems to be either full days or at least 6 hours... I'm not up for that, and I don't want her to have to nap there ... just thinking 8-12 at the most sorta thing...

Am on the North Shore in Auckland (Glenfield). Wondered if someone out there had any suggestions of places/ways to achieve this?

You might have to look at something like a private preschool - although she is prob a bit young. I had the same dilemma and ended up with DS in a private preschool, but he started when he was 2.5yrs old. I struggled to find any daycare etc that would take him for such short hours. Are there any creches around your way that could work for you?

Could you work in with anyone in the same situation and look after their bub, for a morning or too and they do the same?

i know about a couple in our local area but maybe that will help your search.

There is a creche at our local swimming pool where you can leave them for 1.5 hrs. And also a creche at Sylvia Park where also you can leave them for 1.5 hours. Sylvia park is donation and the pool one is $17.

So maybe search out creches rather than daycares. A lot of our baby group were looking for half days recently and there are just hardly any places that offer it. Otherwise as suggested private kindy or preschool. Phone your local kindy and ask maybe.

Highly recommend '4Kids and Whanau' on James Street, Glenfield. My 3 year old goes there and it is lovely. You can do a minimun of 2 mornings 8 till 12. They have an under 2s group and an over 2s group. Lovely people.

Not much help with your area, but you could certainly get those kind of hours in DD's daycare, so if you look hard enough, there will be such a place around

Wow thanks guys - that gives me some ideas and places to look into. I was starting to think it wasn't possible. I had wondered about the Glenfield Leisure centre creche .. will look up that place in James Street. Thanks again.

Have a look to see if there are any community childcare centres in your area - that is what my two have attended. Most children do two mornings a week (the odd one or two do three mornings). Our hours are 8.45 - 1.30
I am in Wellington so can't recommend any sorry

you could look into maybe getting someone in to do in home care for a couple of hours? I used to nanny, and I did from 2pm-6pm for a family and loved it. I didn't really need to work (husband earned enough) but it was great to have a wee bit of extra cash. There might be someone around that would be interested in that kind of thing. And them being in your home with you means that you can keep an eye, but still have "away" time. Just another idea

If you're looking into home-based care, I really recommend Amanda's. Similar to Porse but their support for the educators and carers is amazing, and they provide everything - carseats, cots, blankets, highchair, water trough, easel, endless art/craft supplies, toy library stuff etc. All for free, they get govt funding.
Mama to DS1 (5 years), DS2 (3 years) and...

Im in a similar situation, my daughter used to go to in home care but long story short the carer doesnt work for that company now. Weve kept in touch and had a couple playdates and my girl LOVES going there, so she is going to go to her place for a few hours twice a week works out alot cheaper at $5 an hour and I know shes happy there. Maybe in home care could be a good idea theyre usually quite flexible with hours.

I've heard of some Mum's doing a Nanny share?
Do you have a good friend in a similar situation?
Only reason I say a good friend is I think you'd need to be on the same page of the type of care you would expect from a Nanny.
Good luck :)
