Has anyone done nanny-sharing with another family?

I am wondering if its a viable childcare option. I'd like to have a full-time nanny for our youngest but cant afford it. So thought if there was another family in our area we could potentially share the costs.

Are there any nanny websites I should look at?

My sister does it with another family- it has worked out great for them as her two are now at school but the nanny still looks after them first thing and after school (she is a single mum).

Their nanny (and the one before who did the same thing) was through Porse. My understanding is they have a set rate (e.g. 18 an hour) and that is split between families, so it's not the cost per child.

A friend of mine looked into it, but was put off by the cost. The nanny she liked wanted $37 an hour, without qualifications.

I think it sounds like a great option though, if it works for everyone!

I'm setting up a time to meet a Porse consultant so I can find out more about the costs.

Jade, if it ends up being $37 an hour then its a definite no for us! Yikes!

We did it for a while. Went through Porse, and like jano says, we split the nanny's hourly rate between the two families (ie: each family paid $7 of her $18 hourly rate) - so it was actually pretty cost effective.

We alternated between houses ( 1 week at our place, 1 week at theirs) but it's all pretty flexible and you can obviously arrange things to suit your own needs.

If you can fint the right nanny / family to share with, it's a great option!

Thanks Joscia, its good to hear from someone who has done it!

How did you find the other family to share with or was that something Porse assisted with?

We knew the other family through coffee group, so approached Porse together. They may be able to help you find someone to share with though...

Just a heads up, if you hire a nanny through Porse you have to pay holiday pay, sickness pay etc as you are effectively their employer. We hired a nanny through Gumtree, lots advertise there so I'd try there before Porse.

A friend of mine did it with another fmaily through her coffee group - they had a week at her place then a week at their place (just one child each) and it worked really well. I think the going rates seem to be around $18-20/hr. Have a look at some of the other home-based care websites as I think a couple of them offer nannies.
