Topic: Manduca or Mei Tai? Posted: 02 September 2011 at 8:53am |
I'm looking at getting an Asian style baby carrier.
Would you recommend a Manduca or a Mei Tai?
I can see that lots of people love their Manduca but they are fairly expensive...
What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks :)

I love my manduca, it fits the same everytime, is comfy and just great. I had to borrow my friends mei tai the other day and I didnt like it, DD keep slowly slipping down my front and it dug into my shoulders.

I recommend you get along to a slingbabies meeting if you can, they have a sling library where you can borrow carriers/slings for a couple of weeks for a small joining fee and deposit.
I got a meitai and it was great when DD was younger now she's getting bigger it doesn't support as well as I need it to, haven't tried a manduca they do seem to be popular if a bit more expensive.

I havent tried a mei tai- it would depend on what age/weight u want it to go to. We love our manduca- DS 19 months will still happily sleep on my back in there. It fits both me -5ft3, and my 6ft 3 husband no problems. It can can from newborn- which we havent done cos we didnt have it, but plan to next time ,...right up - our 18kg 4.5yr old fits the maduca fine- although I wopudlnt wanna carry her for long, but she does fit in there fine if u did wanna carry an older or heavier child.

I have both. I had a woven wrap but wanted something a bit easier so got a mei tai. Love it! It's fantastic! But wanted something even easier to do up so got a manduca. Both are fantastic and imo as equally great! I pick my manduca over my meitai simply because it is faster to do up but I still use my Meitai every now and then.

Manduca
Pros
No tying
Has newborn insert
Easy to use
Is super ajustable.
Front and back carries.
Good resale value
Cons
Expensive
Mei Tai
Pros
Can use from newborn
Adjustable or ifferent size people
Front and back carries
Can do hip carry ( as do Manduca but I have nevr managed it , its difficult)
Can fold up small so you can always have it with you.
So many pretty colours/ brands to choose from.
Most are cheaper than a Manduca
Cons
Has a little bit of a learning curve.
You have to tie every time.
Def check out both at Slingbabies. Do you know anyone who has both so you can try them out ?

I don't have a Manduca but I do have an Ergo (which is similar to the Manduca) and a Kozy (mei tei) carrier. If I had to pick one - it would be the Kozy hands down. So versatile. I find it easier to use when back carrying as I use the shoulder toss to get it on which for me means baby is in perfect position everytime, no cumbersome scooting or shimmying to get baby onto my back and into correct position. DP prefers the Ergo but has no qualms about using the Kozy if that is the closest carrier at hand.
However, I have heard very good things about the Manduca and they do have advantages over the Ergo - so it's not really a proper comparison

Actually after reading Delli's post I have to agree that I find it so much easier wearing Lily back carry in the Mei tai, it's much easier imo to do up and use but I've been using mine for almost a year now and I've only had my Manduca maybe 1-2 months so still getting the hang of using it! I do think the Manduca may be slightly more comfier but I think thats because the straps aren't as tight on my body as they are with the Mei Tai but I find I need it really tight or I get a sore back/shoulders.

I have both and do enjoy them both, but for big tips I will always reach for the Manduca first as DS is weightless in it, whereas after a while I definately start to get a bit sore carrying him in the mei tei.

Thanks ladies. Will be going to the Slingbabies meeting in 2 weeks to try them both. Hubby just want me to do enough research before buying anything again; I bought a wrap and my son hates it (plus I found it very difficult to use) :(
