Topic: Waking at 5:30 Posted: 16 September 2011 at 12:50pm |
Help. My son is 18 months old and he started waking up at 5:30 in the morning. He goes to bed at 7:30 and sleeps quite well and he sleeps for about 2 hours during the day. I can't stand waking up at 5:30. We try ignoring him and he keeps quiet for another half hour maybe and then he calls again. He used to sleep until 6:30 up to about a month ago. Any advice please....I'm desperate...I can't watch baby einstein videos at 5:30 in the morning!!!!

Hi buzylizy
I have a similar problem with my DD who is 20 months.
I would recommend www.sleepstore.co.nz - there is some good advice on there.
I have a copy of the sleepsense program that I used when she was 12 months old and it was great, so will dig it out and read that again tonight :)

Daylight savings starts in a few weeks so hopefully he'll be waking at 6.30 instead of 5.30. I did find with DD that she adjusted her body clock a few weeks before daylight savings stopped/started and know of a few other kids who did the same!!

Is the room completely dark? I am obsessed with making sure the room is totally pitch black; if it's not, my 9-month-old WILL start waking earlier... DH says "but the room is dark" but I insist on putting dark sheets over the blackout blinds (you think that's bad - I have friends who have pinned duvets or cardboard over the windows) and then she goes back to sleeping until we go in (at about 7.15am). This has happened a few times lately, as the days get longer. Also, Recently we had my dad sleeping in her room and she started waking earlier and earlier then, I think she is really sensitive to noise and light from 4am onwards.

My kids (especially my early riser) start waking earlier a few weeks out from daylight saving each year too. It should come right when daylight savings kicks in - but you may need to keep bedtime slightly later for a while and gradually push it back.

I wish I could find a solution, we have had months and months of early rising. I am looking forward to and dreading daylight saving as when he wakes at 5am at least it will be 6am but then I think it will start to get earlier and earlier.
We just tend to leave him talking to himself until he starts to get ratty and that is usually around 6am when DH gets up for work. I just keep hoping that out of his own accord he will start sleeping later. It does seem to be quite a common thing for toddlers of this age.

oh i thought things were meant to get better as they got older! DS woke at 4am this morning and that was it, didnt go back to sleep. He was happy to talk to himself which is fine but we can hear all of it as we are right next door so no sleep for anybody.

Both my kids have started waking early (mind you, they share a room, so I think Miss 3.5 would probably keep sleeing if Mister 13 months didn't wake her!).
It used to be 6:45am wake up (both of them) but now it's more like 5-5:30. But Miss 3.5 did the same thing each year before the clocks went forward. The sun's up super early, the birds are chirping, all "morning" signs, so I think (and hope, for all our sakes!) that once the clocks go forward they'll sort themselves out.
I just colsole myself with the fact they'll be teenagers before long and I'll be begging them to get out of bed

In my save our sleep book, one of the suggestions is putting them to sleep a bit earlier if they are waking early. The past few days my DD who has been an awesome sleeper has been waking about 6am instead of 7am. So tonight I am going to try putting her to bed at 6:30pm instead of 7pm and see if that helps.
Some of the other suggestions are, moving the day time nap back by 20 minutes every few days, and also diet if their nutritional needs aren't being met. Or they may be cold.
Too much day sleep can also be another cause - but if he is sleeping two hours then that doesn't sound like too much. If he is taking a little while to fall alseep at nap time then maybe push it out a bit.
Good luck.

DS started waking early at 18months. He would wake up and yell out to us that he wanted to go to the lounge. His father or I would oblige and drag ourselves down to watch mind numbing cartoons We soon realised that he always expected the TV to be turned on for him. When he woke too early we would get up but not turn on cartoons like he was hoping. We explained that waking up before the sun meant that we were coming to the lounge to watch Breakfast or C4 and he would have to play with his toys for entertainment. Seemed to work after a week or two and soon went back to his 7 - 7.30am wake time.

Ours has stayed 5.30am, and it doesnt matter at all what time he goes to bed- will still only sleep max 1 hr in the day and still up at 5.30pm- even we we stayed out late on Fri night!

After Reds recommendation, I borrowed a copy of 'save our sleep' from the library, and have been following the routine for a week with 16mo DD....hve to say it has been working, in fact I have had to wake her up in the mornings - unheard of before! I know it doesn't work for everyone, and I have had to move her from 2 sleeps to 1 sleep in the day, and wake her up after 2.5hrs (she will usually do 3 hrs if just 1 sleep) but it has been an amazing change, great for me as I only have 3ish weeks to go before #2 arrives & really need my own sleep. No more 6am-7am screaming & she seems much happier. Feel like I finally have things under control now
