One of my best friends had awful HG with her first pregnancy, couldn't get off the couch, on daily IV fluids etc.. She put off having #2 as she was so worried about getting it again. However she is currently 22 weeks with #2 and doing really well this time with "normal" MS. She was really well prepared, knowing what she might be in for, so got started on the drugs early and also tried really hard to keep her fluids up and to eat pretty much constantly. I know it's been a huge relief to her that this pregnancy has been so much easier. It can happen

Don't worry, it is easier second time around because you know it WILL END!!! Lol.
I got antenatal depression first time around with HG, but second time around I was more clued up and ready to fight for better drugs and longer hospital stays. It was still very difficult, and I won't be doing it again, but it was easier. I second what others have said - get on the drugs as soon as you can (if this is an option you are willing to do - i only say this because I know two women who refuse to take drugs in pregnancy even when very sick with HG, I think they are nuts lol but that's their choice! ). I was on Zofran 8mg 3x a day with my 2nd, and it was a godsend in that I was able to have a reasonably normal life. Warning though - it was VERY VERY expensive. It cost me about $800 all up; $270 for a couple of months supply. It's a fantastic drug but just wanted to give you a heads up :)
Good luck, and try and enjoy your pregnancy and all the wonderful things with it, even though I know it can be almost impossibly hard at times to be positive. HUGS!
ETA: is MuckyTiger going to reply? I would be interested to read her response...!!

MuppetsMumma - I too lived on Ondansetron first time round. My first prescription was $25 for 6 tablets & after that my doctor made a call to someone & had it recommended for me by a specialist & each prescription after that (6 tabs + repeat 6 tabs) was $3!! Only down fall was I had to go back to the doctors every 11 days to be checked over & get a new prescription. I wasn't complaining though paying $75 all up sure beat over $800.
Still feeling fine so far, have hit 6 weeks today & last time it hit during week 6 so watch this space...... I have some ondansetron left from last time so I'll use that at the first sign of nausea then I'll go to the docs to put a plan of action in place.
Does anyone know if you can have a picc line inserted in New Zealand??

I hate to disappoint you all but i'm fairly sure uterus (how the hell do you spell uterus plural? Are they uteri?) detatching is not actually a real thing. I mean i'm not a doctor or anything but i call bull crap on the entire story. Juuuuust saying.
Dally, i really hope you either don't get hit with it, or can stay on top if it this time around.

Maybe she meant the placenta? But either way, she hasn't been on by the looks of it since Sept 20.

I think she must have meant placenta coz there was a concern over that with me the 1st time but its just not something you go into detail over when a. its not your experience and b. its so freaking scary. I think HG is worse with the first baby just coz its all so new.
Wheeesh thats expensive for Odansetron!! I went straight under a specialist so I didn't even know it cost anything! Its awesome stuff BUT its really not great for the baby - not terrible but not great. So if you can keep on top of things without resorting to that then its probably the best option.

I don't think you are allowed to take anything other than maxalon in the first 13 weeks. Check with your midwife/Dr to make sure.

Its like an IV line but its longer and inserted into a much bigger vein and sits way further up the vein so that drugs can be given for a longer period of time, with out it breaking or having to be removed. I'm guessing Dally (correct me if I'm wrong) would like one because she had to have so many fluid drips last time that a PICC miight be an idea to avoid having IV line inserted everytime, because theoretically, if she looks after it she could have it in for a couple of weeks at a time. Not sure if she will be able to get the docs to agree to it, but its worth a shot.

I was prescribed Odansetron at 9 weeks after a month of constant vomiting so it might be a case by case thing.

Random thought, has anyone found the age gap between your kids more or less likely to get hg?? Like leaving it longer between pregs or closer gap so ur bodies used to the chemical etc?

Just thought I would add that cyclizine is considered safe as well and it's not expensive. I can't remember how much exactly but I'm sure it was less than $20 for three months' worth. (Although I should acknowledge that I am not reliable at the moment - I just found a whole lot of "frozen" veges I had put it in a drawer in the fridge...damn that baby brain)
Cyclizine is stronger than maxalon but I think not quite as strong as odansetron (so you may have to take it more often).
And I too call BS on muckytiger's story, at least to the extent that HG was solely to blame. My HG was pretty bad last time and I was never told there was any risk of anything like that happening. I got sore abs from all the vomiting, to be sure, but I seriously doubt you could do that sort of damage unless something else was going on.

Jake was 2yo exactly when we got our BFP for Ty and I didn't get as sick but a. they were onto it sooner and b. my hcg levels were slightly lower. Thats the problem for me and according to the specialist-y people its not something your body gets use to. I reckon making sure you're really hydrated before you go into pregnancy and also having a midwife who takes your history seriously and gets you in for IV hydration and gets you scripts for stuff early is important. You'll do well chick. Even if you aren't as sick it'll still be hard coz you have Char now and you can't always rest when you need to but you get through it

Babe, out of interest, how much were you taking? I'm just curious, you don't have to answer.
I was on 8mg 3x a day and was a bit worried about my baby but she turned out ok thankfully!
