Hey Ladies,
One of the factors in us deciding not to have a third child was financial reasons. But one thing I found odd is that people kept saying – oh just wait til they get to school, that’s when they really start costing more. I just can’t see it. Maybe if you didn’t have kids in daycare, or they were going to a private school, but for me I can not see how it will cost more when they get to school – even though mine are only in daycare part time. I’m looking forward to the savings when they get to school!! So if anyone could enlighten me?? (I’m assuming I’m missing some costs that will increase when they get to school.)

OK, so currently we spend 200/wk for their two days in daycare, plus $22 for DS’s kindy (private kindy). My husband takes one day off a week which saves us $100 in daycare costs as I work 3 days (but his income will increase when they are at school as he will be back to fulltime). Next year my daughter will start at kindy too (long story) just for one session and DS will add that session too so that will be another $50/wk. So total will be about $270 for childcare for two kids part time til DS starts school mid-year.

If they were both in daycare fulltime it would cost about 415/wk (cheap-ish by ak standards).

When they start school the fees are around $200 each for the whole year. Even if they did afterschool care it would be 60 in total for two days a week (what they currently do in daycare). And full time (which would mean me and hubby are both working more as I work 3 days and he does 4 currently) it would be $150 for both. Still nothing compared to $415 in daycare for both fulltime.

So even if I add 1000 each for school books, uniforms and trips etc (and I would spend far more on daycare clothes than school uniforms anyway!! And they will stop growing out of clothes so quickly so the clothes bill will actually go down a lot!) I’m guessing we will be saving around 9000 with paying for afterschool care every week (which I wouldn’t be due to all the holidays so savings are actually more). If I still work part time but spread the hours out then we will have no afterschool care (save another 3K) and DH will be working an extra day (at least 10K more a year).

They already do dancing / athletics / swimming / soccer, so wouldn’t spend anything extra on activities initially. I spend a fair amount on toys already, so I’m guessing it won’t really increase much as they will get less stuff (just b’days / xmas) but maybe higher value items.

Am I missing something???

I can't answer your question as both my children are in daycare full time - but I'm also hoping costs decrease when they start at school as I'm currently paying $2,000 a month in daycare fees!

Surely school can't cost that much...

I'm with you RachelBerry ... even with part time daycare its over 1000 a month for us - I just can't see how school (at 200/yr) could cost more!?

I don't know that we spend MORE with our daughter at school, but it can still be expensive depending what school you go to.
My daughter's school they have activity fees which you pay at the start of the year in a lump sum...this means your child's school trips are paid for over the whole year.
The uniforms are freaking expensive,we paid $280 for the summer one plus PE uniform, but we got two dresses...the winter uniform was about $180...
The other thing that can add to the expense is after school activities, they can get costly.

However knowing how expensive Daycare is,I don't think its actually more expensive, but some might have a different experience to me

I am not sure that it is kids cost more at school than they do at day care but they do cost more when they get older.

If we had put of having kids due to money then we would of had none.

I have 3 at school now & pay

$600 school fees (public school)
$180 books
$2395 uniform
$200 bags/lunch boxes
$15 a day per child for after school care (have done this not any more).
$18 for all 3 to buy their lunch at school...only as a treat, so not often.

Holiday programs from $30-$50 a day per child

our school does a lot of fun raising & we pay for all extras so I am always paying for something, last week DS1 needed $2 for science project, DS2$3 needed $1 for seeds each, $30 for calendars, just had school trips that were $15 for 1 &$10each for the other 2. DS1 is in a school group & I have paid out $130 so far. We have BBQ day,ice block days, sausage sizzles, gold coin days for charities, mufti days & so on & with 3 of them it adds up. So at a guess an extra $200 each a yr per child.

The cost of a child go up as they grow up. I was always looking forward to the saving money from nappies & formula but found there was always something else the money went on for the child.

Other cost that go up are toys & clothes. When they get to a certain age you will be buying what they want & not what you want. The cost of food will go up as they eat more.

A lot of place are entry free or lower costing while pre school & once at school you will be paying more.

DS1 is at intermediate next yr so the $ will go up & he will be getting a school bus. Also not sure about after school care for him if I am working or studying.

Good point re food and entry to places Jazzy. But then you'd be taking them out less as they'd be at school all week. They eat me out of house and home already!! Not looking forward to DS becoming a teenager! But all those other costs don't add up to anywhere near daycare costs and I have two not 3. Plus add in the extra income and we will be WAY better off.

We already have to buy calenders (3 cos DS is at kindy and dc) and do fundraising things, gold coin donations, photos etc, and I used to do Playcentre too until last term so there were photos, raffles etc for them too.

Even at 500 each for uniforms that would be less than what I spend on daycare clothes a year I think (remembering that they go through a couple of sizes at this age a year and THRASH them at daycare, and I have to buy "good" clothes too).

If it costs $12 for them to both buy lunch, that is way less than I spend at a cafe with them both on a day off anyway! lol. I already buy bags (1 for DD, 2 for DS) and lunchboxes etc.

I spend around 100/term for swimming (DS only til next year), 7.50 per dance class plus hundreds on uniform, concert etc for dancing, soccer was about 140/term I think, so if they both do it thats 280 ... and running only goes up a little when they get to 5. So I don't think they'd be doing much more than that at primary school. We couldn't fit much more into the week! haha.

And yeah I forgot about nappies, when DD is out of them thats another saving.

I can see that teenagers would be expensive with their clothes / gifts etc. But primary school looks alot cheaper than daycare to me.

PS - and 30-50/day for school holiday programmes is better than 67/day for daycare (DD) by a long shot, and we'd probably only do that one week per holidays if at all.

Well it sounds like money is not an issue & I guess you will not notice much of a change if any....so now I have forgotten what the original question was ha ha

For me it is about the same if not cheaper. We didnt do daycare of kindy. She was a playcentre kid so I am still spending the same there as it is a fee per family $35 currently, but can go as often as you want.

Then clothes: I buy less, she doesnt need that much. Her uniform I got 3 -polo tshirts from the school at $20/$25 can remember the price and I was told I am buying too many. So got one in size 4 and two in size 6 (Andrew can use these too one day). Then her top for winter was $20 and I bought a size 4 and 6. Then shoes is any, Got her socks for winter (any black or white ones). And any black bottoms. So got some 3/4 ones, tracksuit ones and skirts. This is costing me less than having to buy casual to dress her in differently every day. So buy less clothes now.

Toys--- I buy less to be honest. Cant see it being more expensive though as a lot of things we make now.

Then food: She still eats the same as normal. I still bake the same send the same things in etc.

Sports: At the moment still relatively cheap.

Then other costs like your books and that. it was something like $45 for the whole year and now got Please pay $2.2 for another mathbook. Will cost me more to buy it all myself and this way all the kids have the same. (this was for the first year next year it is like $27).

School activities that they go out on and trips. That varies. They go about once a term somewhere. And no more than $25 per term for this.

So I budget $50 per month for all school things, including spending money at calf club day and so far we dont go over that.

So yip not that expensive so far (but we are in a country school with a very very active PTA)

I think it really depends on how many kids you have & since I have 3 I have to times everything by 3 & that is where it costs.

If you pay out a lot now then no you wont notice an increase at school.

One thing I did find at kindy was I used old clothes for them to muck around in & now at school they they have uniforms, I paid out a lot as DS2&3 are close in age & in the same size & DS1's is put away for them to grow into as he is now in sz10 & the other 2 are in size 6. So they have muck about clothes that have been handed down & I buy new for all 3 for going out clothes so I do pay more now for clothes & after 7yrs clothes seam to cost more anyway.

They had bags & lunch boxes for kindy, but I pay more for school bags as I want good quality ones that will last the yr so$40-50 per bagx3 & lunch boxs we have been through heaps as they get broken where as at kindy they had 1 that lasted the whole time...& then there are the $40 jumpers that get lost at school arghhh..think I have spent a couple of hundred $ in replacing lost/stolen clothes.

I had DS1 in after school care 1 day a week as his friends went & it was at chipmunks for $20 a session approx, so thought that was a good treat for him, we stopped due to his wishes...I might need to look at after school care next yr depending on what I am doing.

Book I pay $45-60 per child & yr 0-1-2 I have to pay an extra $18 to the school for other reading books,& I have to buy extra during the yr. Yr 0-1-2 they need book bags also & they only last a yr really so $6 extra (x2) as my kids are yr 0, 2, & 6

SMoody I am with you on the toy thing & for me it is cause I am sick of picking them up & they are not played with properly as my kids turn everything into guns or toys of mess destruction

Next yr I am going to keep a record of all the extras, as we have ice block day monthly, bbq day several times in summer, school trips & people coming to do talks several times a term so it all adds up.

& for me I never had to pay out much for pre school care so I guess I notice it. DS1 went to day care a couple of days a week when I was working & then to kindy which was never much & DS2 & 3 went to kindy which was $20 a week...& we did not spend money at cafes etc, if I paid out heaps at pre school I would not notice the difference now.

eta.. but with saying all that there is no way I would not of have DS3 because of money & we would of has #4 if it had happened

Totally hear ya Nikki - I keep thinking the same!! At the moment I am spending $11,000 a year on daycare and it will be $8,000 for primary school (private). I do realise that there are uniforms and music etc on top of that but I just think of how much time she spends sleeping at daycare and it just doesnt seem right

Thanks guys, thats so good to hear that it won't be worse than what we are currently spending at least initially. I guess it depends on how much you spend on daycare as to whether it gets more expensive or less once they get to school.
And I'm a bit of a toy shopper too Jazzy (I remember your other post about Xmas toy shopping) so I'm hoping that bill doesn't get worse, haha.

I should add, finances were not the only factor in deciding not to have no 3 (and we're only 95% sure there won't be another!) but long term costs were a factor. My age, the stress on our relationship with a new bub, less room in the car / house and the difficulty of travelling with 3 kids, more time out of my career, wanting to get my body / energy / health back before I'm 40, wanting to get the mortgage paid off, more quality time for the two we already have etc etc there are lots of reasons really. Part of me would love another, but the other part says we should have started 10 year earlier, and our relationship may not last another round of sleep deprivation! lol

Oh and you're right Jazzy about the times 3 for all costs, that is a big difference from having two (and daycare costs x3 is one of that main reasons why we didn't have another child soon after no 2. DD being a "trying" toddler and complete lack of energy was the other reason!).

Nikki I so hear you, lol. If #4 had come along when planned all would of been good, but now I don't think I would cope as I can sleep through the night (most of them) no nappies & so on, yip new challengers have arisen as they get other but now I have a life also

When I was working it was nights & weekends so DH looked after the kids & I did not have to pay for care which was great as I got good pay...hence my toy addiction ha ha.. so I think cause I never had to pay for care I find school expensive & that is mainly due to all the extras, would rather pay more in fees & have everything covered...I guess I should start claiming on tax for school stuff

Forgot the school fees is $60 per year and $80 if there is two of them to a max of $100 per year per family.

If she wants to go on the bus for to school and back it is $40 per child.

Another reason I love this school.

It does depend on where you live, kids etc. My son's old school was decile 9 fees were $37.50 a term, his uniform was damn expensive, $45 for one pair of cargo pants, polar fleeces were something like $50 or $60 and polo shirts and shorts were around $30-35. Coin donations on top for mufti day, sausage sizzle, cake stalls $2 hot dog every week. My son was forever having holes in his pants as he is so hard on them so replacing them at $45 a pop does get expensive.

He has special needs we moved out of Auckland to a much smaller town he is in special needs class and we have paid bugger all for things I can't remember what we just paid for his fees and wears normal clothes to school.

My kids aren't at school yet, but I'm looking forward to it. As for when they are teenagers - my income will increase as they grow due to my contract conditions, so I think that will just suck up the extra income, rather than being too much of an extra drain.

I hear parents all the time coming in so excited when their children (younger siblings of children in my class) start school - no more daycare fees! I haven't heard one parent, who had children at daycare, comment on the cost of school/5+ year olds. The parents who haven't experienced the huge weekly costs of care do notice it though.

Food....C has a sandwich, some fruit,a bar and a yogurt...thats not bad and so long as she doesn't try and sneak the food after school,it generally lasts...but she still eats me out of house and home, her appetite has gotten bigger since shes gotten older and apparently shes always hungry (although now I tell her that she needs to go and drink a big glass of water cos I think sometimes she mistakes hunger for dehydration)

Thats not a school cost, thats a "child gets bigger appetite (sometimes ) increases cost. "

That is so my kids school, our fees are $200 per child a yr & no discount for more children so $600 for us...no wonder lots don't pay. We may be in a financially good area but there are still lots of people struggling.

That's a lot, you would need a good income to cover that or working would not be worth it.

When DS1 was in day care at work & I worked 3 days during the week (& 2 day in the weekend) it cost us just over $100 a week for part time care & 1 child. I think about $40 a day & that was 8yrs ago.

At the end of the day pre school care is something you may need to do to work so your choice where as school is something you have to do so they decide what your kids wear, activities etc.

If you look at school as 6 hrs baby sitting then it is cheap care...if you did not have to pay for care prior to school then it is expensive & all the weekly extras so add up.

I think it is also harder for working parents as their kids get older in regards to after school care. DS1 is going to intermediate next yr & if I am working or doing a course I have no idea what I will do with him. No after school care there.
