When did your baby drop day sleeps altogether? Jacob (16 months) has been hard work to get down in the evenings lately - very happy, just bouncing off the walls and NOT sleepy. He only has one sleep a day, for a couple of hours. I'm dreading the thought that he's getting too much and is ready to drop this... I was really counting on having it when the baby was little! Any thoughts?

I'm in the same boat - a toddler who doesn't seem remotely tired at bed time. He can have only 40 minutes sleep at day care but still not seem tired at the end of the day! I've started putting DS down at 7.30 instead of 7pm and he is normally asleep by 8pm and up at 6.30pm. I also never let him nap more than 2 hours during the day (I will wake him if he is still sleeping).
Perosnally I'd rather be putting him down later than giving up the day sleep just yet... I figure that 1.5-2 hours per day is going to be a life saver in the next few months!

I thought kids don't drop the day sleep til - 2 - 2 1/2, some still sleep at 3 yr + Please please let that be us
My 20 months twins have been terrible the last week like your Jacob just wanting to play I thought it was the heat but tonight the same so maybe is becoming habit... DD not going to sleep until 9.30. Very over it but hoping is just a wee phase and will ride it out as not giving up on day sleeps either. Sorry no advice or tips I'd love to read some too though...

Maybe rejig your bedtime routine, and when you are giving food and see how you go. Often it is all a case of timing, routine, and a full tummy.
Do you have blackout blinds in the bedroom? it is harder when it is light so much later.

Does sound very early to be dropping sleep altogether, maybe the humidity etc could be making it hard for him to drop off, my bubs has been like this in the heat.

thats very early to drop a daysleep, my 4 1/2 has only just now dropped her after lunch nap (and actually she still has it and puts herself to bed).
Could you try shorten the daysleep? or maybe make sure in the afternoon he has lots of outdoor play time to tire him out a bit more.

Interesting - a whole heap of babies in the dec09 group (including mine, gah!) have just given up napping, or if they nap are becoming terrors to put to bed. I'm finding DD1 is not remotely interested in a nap at her usual time (about 1), and even if I can get her to lie down and put a serious effort into going to sleep as opposed to just tantrumming for an hour that she's not having a snooze, she doesn't seem to be able to do it.
Our group had generally put it down to them all turning 2 and maybe they were reaching that age. But if your bub is doing it too, maybe it's a combination of changes in routine, lots of weird foods, and strange people around, as well perhaps as less chance for tearing round outside? Crap timing for you, of course, but I'd probably persist a while yet, and try implementing a firm bedtime routine at the usual time (perhaps put DH in charge of it, but I guess that depends on his phD?) and hope he gets over it soon.
The blackout curtains are a good idea too, as well as a bit of indoor time out of the bright sunlight prior to bedtime?

DS was still happily having a 2 hour nap until he was 2y4m. Then the long nap started affecting his bedtime  . He went through a stage of 'resting' in his room - he was in there, I was down here, and I didn't mind what he did as long as I got my break! Now he still needs a nap some days, but not that long. The other thing that makes a difference is the timing of the nap - if he naps at all any later than 2pm, bedtime doesn't happen till maybe 9pm  . If I can get him to nod off (usually in the car  ) late morning or early afternoon, it's okay. Then sometimes he'll go without a nap for days, then it will catch up with him and he will need naps again.
So basically the nap to no nap transition for him has been ongoing for six months or more, and depends on how tired he is, how early he got up and how busy he has been. The bedtime is affected by the length and timing of the nap.
So maybe tinkering with any or all of the above will help your wee fellow!

Lily is hit and miss with day sleeps lately but from about 11months until 18 months she had no day naps at all! Umm nighttime her bedtime is always 8/8.30pm otherwise she has a very rough night!

Well, it is encouraging that most people think he's too young to be likley to be dropping a sleep. On the other hand, last night was just the same  I did have some success the night before, when I put him to bed for his day sleep earlier in the day, so I'm going to try doing that - but that in itself can be hard work if he's hyped up (which he is a lot at the moment, we've got lots of loving but rather high-intensity Aunties round).
Sigh at the bad timing - it wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't really hoping to have the daytime sleep to get some kind of break when the new baby arrived.

We started having problems getting DS to go to sleep before 9pm for a week or so a few months back. He was then waking at 6am and very tired in the morning as not getting much sleep at night. I was thinking that maybe he was ready to cut his daysleep out (usually around 2-3 hours long). The following week he went back to his normal routine. I just made sure that I didnt let him sleep for more than 2 1/2 hours during the day. He goes to bed between 7 and 7.30pm but he doesnt always go to sleep straight away. I would tinker abit with his day sleep times and see how that goes. It can be a hard time of year with so much going I suppose. Hopefully for your sake he will continue his day sleeps for awhile longer yet!

DS still has day sleeps and I hear you on wanting that break when the baby arrives - I would have been gutted if he'd have dropped it when DD was born as I would usually get an hour or so to myself in those first few months.
I've had to rejig his nap time a few times to get it right in the last few months though. He used to go down at 12.30pm but that changed to 12pm and is now back to 11.30am (hence my computer now time as they are both asleep hehe). He goes to bed at 7pm each night so the later nap was affecting his night sleeps until I moved it around.
I hope it's jut a phase!

I would def try an earlier nap, DS goes down between 10am to 10.30 am for 1-2 hours so we can still put him to bed at 7.30pm.
Hopefully your DD sleeps at the same time so you can get some hopes time
