Topic: Demand feeding to routine Posted: 26 January 2012 at 4:53pm |
Hi all, my baby boy is 2 weeks today and is currently demand feeding, however I am wanting to put him into a routine. But not sure how I do this as he is feeding constantly and to move to every 3 hours seems really hard! Has anyone done this recently and can give me some tips? Thanks

At two weeks old, I'd think that your baby is feeding frequently to build up your supply and possibly having a growth spurt. If you can bear it, just go with him.
But I have friends who follow Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby book. It's fairly regimented but works for them.

When I moved DS to a routine, I did it without any set times in mind.
Basically he was in a cycle of sleep, feed, tummy-time/cuddles, sleep feed...etc..
At around 6/7pm after a wee bit of tummy time he would get a bath then another feed before sleep, then every waking after that was just feed (change if needed) quick cuddle then sleep until morning.
I did that to differentiate between night and day.
He moved into the routine really well.
That's what worked for me, but every baby is different.
Hope that helps!
Oh he was 4weeks old when I switched from demand feeding.

I found by the time DD was 6 weeks I was able to stretch the time out between feeds and have something resembling a routine, still fed in between if she wanted/demanded it.
It's best for your milk supply to feed on demand until at least 6 weeks.

I would wait, there is a few growth spurts coming up when there is cluster feeding. Tummy's are so little at this age so they need to feed more often.

During the day, we let Evie sleep for 2.5hrs, then wake her up to change her and feed her. Then we demand feed at night.
Day 2 of doing this, and she slept from 12.45 - 6.15am! Was fantastic.
MW had suggested doing this as she was having long naps during the day, and by waking her during the day, she's moved her long naps to the nighttime.

At 2 weeks, I would be going with the flow hun... teeny baby needs to work hard for milk and build up supply as he grows.... It can seem like an enternity on the couch with your boob out but this, like everything else will pass and you will miss it!

I totally wouldn't be thinking about routine at 2 weeks... I found it much less stressful with my 3 to just follow babies lead...
