    Posted: 29 January 2012 at 1:06pm
hi there, I'm brand new here and starting to read through all the advice, but had a question i need to know the answer to before i ovulate (in next day or 2!)... I'm 39 and apparently my eggs are now running out sooner than they should be. (background - i do have one child and have been trying since then for 3 years and tried for many years before my DD too... so regardless of how old my eggs are, i don't concieve well!)
We are just in the private system and while waiting on some other tests am trying clomid. 150mg (3 pills) for first cycle and i've got 4 eggs ready to go! they didn't apparently want or expect 4 as didn't realise i'd respond that well. now i don't want quads!!!!... but really, how likely is it that they will all fertilise? the way i see it, is it's like having 4 months chances all at once and i've gone way longer than 4 mths and zilch. my cycles are pretty textbook and i know when i ovulate, so it's not timing or anything that's the issue. They said being my first month, don't have sex and next mth we will try less pills. Because it's only my first try. But it's another $300 next time of course... Would you give it a shot and risk muliples? Or do i just wait another month even though time is of the essence...

Hi,

I don't take clomid so don't have that background to run on but I've been ttc for over 2yrs so I understand that side of things.
If it were me I'd probably just do it but then again ending up with quads is quite daunting isn't it. I don't know the stats on whether or not all four are likely to fertilise. $300 just to watch eggs grow is pretty steep and seems like a waste if you don't try.

However so of the more seasoned ttc/clomid girls might have more perspective.

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide to do.

as much as i want a baby i think i'd prefer no baby over 4 babies! i could cope with twins at the most... well i'd cope with and love whatever i got, but practically 2 would be more than enough. But yeah $300 bucks to not even try this cycle - i hate not being able to try in a cycle even when it costs nothing (if we are sick or DH is away) so to pay all that money and keep my pants on... :(

Fair enough and I'd imagine if I were in your situation I'd probably err on the side of caution...tis easy for me to say go for it but its not me having to make the actual decision. I guess you can be positive in the fact you responded well to the meds and made some pretty good eggs.

hi there- I would suggest you post this in the clomid pill poppers thread under coping with infertility, the ladies in there are lovely and there will definitely be people that have been in your situation. Personally (and I have been on clomid but have not over responded) I would follow their advice, it is hard when its something you want more than anything, but they have valid reasons for their advice, we don't want another Octomum on our hands!
Hope you find loads of support on here, I know I wouldn' have coped without the ladies on this site xx

I had 9 cycles on clomid but was never monitored so I could have easily had multiple eggs some cycles. If it was me I would go for it because as you say the odds of quads are pretty low.

I also was never monitored, so I could've been like LR and had multiple eggs. I don't know if I ever over-responded, but not sure what I would do if I got told not to try. It's a hard one for sure! Good luck.

I personally would go for it.
I'd rather risk 4 eggs (and not all 4 - or any, may fertalise anyway) than forgo it and be no further ahead than you are at the moment.

well luckily most of you said go for it, as DH and I couldn't help but jump each other last night! I thought he'd be freaked out at the thought of quads (and he almost chickened out) but he didn't freak as much as i thought he would. It was only day 11 yesterday tho, but as i have 26 day cycles i think i ovulated yesterday or today... my follicles were between 18 and 22cm and she said ovulation was imminent...
And now it's over and heat of moment is gone, i don't regret trying... can't help but think it still won't result in any baby tho :(
and thanks to suggestion of clomid thread - i did stumble across that after posting in here too :)

Well, you got eggs, so all the sperm has to do is get to them and fertilize them - I hope it works for you (although perhaps not four times over!) Do update us, I'd love to hear...

nope no quads, triplets, twins or even a single this month :( but it turns out that clomid seemed to lengthen my cycle (grrr 3 days late, but i knew i wasn't pregnant so wasn't tempted to test)... i think i ovulated 3 days late too, so our timing would have been all out as we didn't try properly with the risk of quads. oh well a new month, new hope...

I know i'm too late and you already did it and it didn't work :( Sorry to hear that.

I thought i'd add my 2cents for anyone reading.

I took clomid (50mg) with my number 1 and 2. The first time they told me i had multiple eggs and that we could try but risked multiples, we weren't worried we had no other children and thought we could get it over and done with in one go.

We got a BFP and 2 days before our wedding we had a scan which showed TRIPLETS! Sadly 2 weeks later when we went back we only had one baby with a heartbeat. She is now a happy healthy nearly 4 year old.

So yes, if you don't want multiples be wary and listen to your Dr!

Goodluck for next month!!!

Wow, starting on 150mg is pretty high! What dose will they have you on this month?

It is tough to shell out big dollars to be told it's a no go (I had a year of not responding to monitored clomid cycles, so well know how it feels), but, yeah, the idea of 3 or 4 babies all at once is pretty daunting! And although the odds of fertilisation for each is low (and so x 4 even lower), it does happen. Our specialist has had two cases of triplets through IUI (he tells us the women produced no follicles, or three follicles, each decided to take the risk).

Fingers crossed for you it doesn't take much longer, and on a new dose you don't have the over response problem.

i'm not too fussed on having twins, but any more than that might be a bit much! more the risk of carrying them at my age (nearly 40) as much as anything.
I'm taking 2 pills this month for another monitored cycle. then hopefully next mth will finally get my hsg test that i've waited almost 6 mths for. then maybe an iui cycle. then that will probably be it :(
