Topic: Aspergers??? Posted: 23 March 2012 at 11:59am |
Hi, I have a tricky situation I would love some perspective on. My 3 1/2 year old son is showing some signs of Aspergers, We have a big family history of it so I have been on edge since he was born watching for it. My husband thinks I am seeing problems that aren't there but he gets stressed when his routine is changed, paces in circles when unsure of himself, repeats the same things over and over and over, has lots of imaginative talk about OSO and other things he has seen on TV , complains of being lonely if I am not giving him undivided attention and has problems mixing with other kids. I don't really want to label him as having "special needs" because that might end up with him being put in a box for the rest of his life when he really is a wonderful wee man. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks.

I've taught teenagers with Aspergers, some who have had intervention and some who haven't. From what I have seen, it's not necessarily the diagnosis or the professional help they need, it's just someone who is aware of their needs and can work with them. J had professional help to manage his behaviours, and although he was odd, he was fine. S had no help at all until she was 14, then got intervention and by 16 all was good. P had no diagnosis, but very supportive family who worked with her behaviours, and she did really well.
So if you have knowledge of Aspergers, can see areas where he needs help (as all children do in some way or other), and you can give him that support, (like in socialisation, expressing his feelings, reacting appropriately etc) then I don't see a need to have him put through the psycho medical routine just to be given a label.

I would seek medical advise.
If he is diagnosed with Aspergers or something then you know what direction to take.
I would not look at it as being labelled but more an understanding of what he needs & how the family can meet his needs.
I think it would be worse speculating than knowing for sure. It may not be what you are thinking.
All the best.

I would tend to agree with Jazzy and get him tested if it is possible, or at least start down the track. If it comes to nothing, thats great, but if something does get picked up then my opinion would be that the earlier you know for sure, the earlier everybody around him can start giving him the support he needs.
As a teacher, I know that children that are 'labelled' as such (don't really like the term as I believe it is more about knowing what is going on not neccessarily labelling) sometimes have access to more support/opportunities then those that haven't been tested.

I tend to agree with Sophie - the earlier you get your child assessed, the earlier helpful interventions such as Speech/Language Therapy, teacher-aide (even at day care) and disability allowances (if necessary) can be put in place.

my 4 1/2yr old son has just been through the assessment 4 aspergers and high functioning autism. with the paeds department he got an early intervention assessment, occupational thearpy assessment and we have just completed the asd plus course. from what i have learnt as its more about understanding the triggers, and the way they think.
With the help and information we have been given it has made our life easier.
another course we did was incredible years through family works.
its best to get him into the system now so when it comes to school time u can tell the school what he needs etc... my son starts in august and have already met with prinicpal and teacher to discuss him and help him adjust to the change.
Good luck and if u have anymore q's or thoughts feel free to pm me :)

also our paeds dr gave him the provisional label just so he could get into the system as he doesnt believe in labelling either.
