Strategies?

nearly two year old isn't great at brushing her teeth. She is ok with the front ones and does a fairly good job herself. But not good with the back ones (first molars) and can't get behind her bottom teeth.

Our strategy so far is to hold her down on our laps and get it over with amidst the yelling.

There must be easier ways...

I think she'd quite like to be using an electric tooth brush like we do. Is there any reason why a child can't use one?

Dont see why a toddler cant use an electric, itd be more 'fun'. I had trouble getting my daughter to brush her teeth she would just clamp her mouth shut, but plunket lady suggested making it fun and make lion noises or similar, means that they open their mouth up nice and wide so getting those back teeth is easier. Try to make it fun.

I agree with Dophy and making it fun rather than a chore. Our DS espec enjoys it when one of us brushes our teeth with him and sort of show him how to do it but make it fun :)

I agree with the others, plus try getting her to brush your teeth while u do hers. Let her do it in the bath. Have her brush a dolls "teeth" etc.

We've also done animal noises and lately have had success with those Tommee Tippee bath stick on's that happen to be smiling so we get the girls to make the same face as the fish and the starfish.

we always try for the fun. and sure she opens her mouth, but doesn't like the brushing and snaps it shut immediately the brush goes anywhere near her, and then the yelling.

We also try to brush our teeth with her, but because we use an electric toothbrush and she doesn't, she just wants to take our brush.

haven't tried in the bath, but we can't just leave her to brush by herself cos she doesn't get everywhere.

has anybody used an electric toothbrush with a toddler?

Bribery? If she lets you brush first then she can brush second and get a sticker..

I use an electric toothbrush with my toddler. It is fine, and is the only way he will brush his teeth. Colgate (I think) make toddler ones, and we have the Diego version. He has also used our eletric toothbrush as well.

Kids love the electric ones!

Heads up for kids that hate to brush their teeth, they could have sensitive teeth. Maybe go to a dental nurse and mention this, they can coat them to make them less sensitive & the kids more receptive to brushing teeth.

I think I'll try an electric brush. I think part of the problem is she can't understand why our toothbrush is so different and she wants ours.

I'll try the bribery thing too but it doesn't really seem to work with her (yet?). food seems to be her main motivating factor but treats and toothbrushing don't go together!

I hope you don't mind if I hijack this thread..

My Mr 16 months is a fighter when it comes to teeth, I try distracting him, letting him do it himself etc but I can get the bottom row down quickly then its pushing me out of the way and refusing to open his mouth for the top ones, getting a wee bit upsetting!!

He is only 16 months and isnt really in to bribery at the moment, any good tricks?? DH did hold the dummy in front of him and I managed to get the brush in and clean the top row but bubba was NOT impressed

megan, one thing we've tried recently that seemed to interest her was brushing her teeth in front of a mirror - whether she's doing it, or us. She seems to quite like being able to see exactly what's going on.

She's not a fan of the electric toothbrush unfortunately. Maybe she'll get used to it. While with my sister's family she was fascinated by her older cousin's electric toothbrush and was very keen to use it, but didn't like it turned on!

It's been a bit easier lately, i guess just persevering and making sure she knows that even if she protests, it's still going to happen.

In the morning I brush my teeth with DD so she can see what it's all about, I explain as I do it ... "look how wide mummy opens her mouth!" We also sing a song, which goes like this ...

Open wide like a crocodile aaa aa aaa aaaaaa a a a ... lol hard to write it down but when we aaa aa aaa etc its with a wide mouth in the hopes she will copy.

When it's time for us to have a go at brushing her teeth I give her a rubber duck to hold on to so she is distracted.

One of these ideas might help??

Macleans have an iphone app that is awesome. although, my kids have always enjoyed brushing their teeth, but i dont like having to do it, so the app gets them to nag me to remember to brush their teeth.
not sure if its available on android phones or not though.

We're quite lucky that our daughter LOVES brushing her teeth, but she's much the same, we have to get in and help her with the back teeth. I've found she's much better when I brush my teeth with her, she even pretends to spit (quite cute!)

I think an electric toothbrush is a fantastic idea though, good luck

I agree with tiger_lily. I get DS to watch me brush my teeth and I pull funny faces and exaggerated wide open mouths, and cheesy big teeth smiles. I also let him try to brush my teeth, then he's happy to open his mouth wide for me to brush his.

Couple of ideas:

- sticker or a "dollar" (10c!) in the piggy bank for letting mummy/daddy do her teeth
- singing - she tries to match your note or you try to match her's "ahhh"
- my son seems to like making the noises "ahhhh" "eeee" when i do his teeth and when he does them!
- you have a go and then she has a go

Yep electric toothbrushes are fine just check the packaging what age it goes from - my son loves his because it has spiderman on it!
