    Posted: 09 September 2012 at 2:16pm
DD1 (2.5 years) has had an upset tummy of sorts on and off for about 5-6 months. In that time, we have done a multitude of tests (including bacterias, parasites, gluten intolerance and allergies, and a few others) and the only thing that has come up was a common parasite in one of her many, many stool samples. This was treated, although not very effectively as the medicine tasted awful and we couldnt get it into her very easily (she did have about half the dose and improved slightly afterwards).

On the surface, she seems pretty well (with the odd cold here and there) but gets lethargic often, is overly sensitive (even for a toddler), on/off diarrhea and inbetween that, has awful smelling and looking poo, of which she can never get to the toilet in time (so I guess there is little warning for her) - these poos seem to be getting worse and more explosive. Nappies dont make it any easier and it just shoots up the back and out the legs like she's a newborn (plus she does well with wees on th toilet so Id prefer not to go backwards there for the sake of convenience! Most of the time, she ends up needing to be washed down in the shower. She has also had a few nights up vomiting (3-4 times over the 5 months), always at the same time as the diarrhea and but generally only for the one night.

We've now been referred to peadiatrics at the hospital to see what else if could be but I've been wondering if perhaps it could be lactose intolerance. She went on a nursing strike at 10 months that my supply only held up with for another 2 months of pumping (she would drink it in a cup). She has a wide variety of foods in her diet, doesnt have a milk drink but does eat yoghurts and cheese regularly.

Has anyone had experience with lactose intolerance? What are the symptoms??
Or if anyone has any idea what else this could be or things I could try, I am open to suggestions!

Thanks

Could be?? Sounds like what I've heard of people with lactose intolerance.

Have you thought about going to a Naturopath?

Poor baby! My DS (now 2) had a diagnosis of lactose intolerance and had similar symptoms but was a lot younger and it seems to have resolved itself now.

In the interim for waiting for a diagnosis you could cut out dairy and introduce soy milk if she is still taking a bottle - for cooking etc. It's more expensive but you should notice a remarkable improvement in a week if lactose intolerance is the case. The experiment should give you some clues either way.

You have probably already got her on probiotics but if not I would start her on them - you can get these from chemists or health food shops, and just mix them into a bottle or her favourite food - comes in powdered form.

Hope this helps!

As it turns out, we just got some more test results that have shown up cryptosporidium, likely picked up from the calf pens (not that she comes in there with me but its pretty easy to transfer). Have organised to get our water tested as well just in case.

The nurse suggested treating this as a separate thing from the initial issues, and hopefully once it passes through her system, she will be back to normal. We did start lactose free today just to see if it made a difference but given the minimal amount she has anyway, will keep offering it unless she is still not right post-crypto.

Thanks for your responses ladies

Poor wee thing, have you tried going lactose free? Would it do any harm to try it and see, have tests for ceoliacs been done too? I have had a lot of problems with my stomach, the specialist I saw said to see any real impact I needed to cut out the specific food for a month. Hope things are improving!

Thanks BikeBaby. Shes all back to normal now after a rather nasty bout of cryptosporidium - horrid!

Silver lining is since it cleared, she is 100% accident free with her poos - I guess the diarrhea for so long makes her super aware of her toileting cues
