Topic: What to do? Posted: 30 October 2006 at 5:15pm |
Ok so my neighbour has a son he must be about 8years old and he has Autism...I see him everyday jumping on his tramp and looking over the fence. Most of the time i just nod or wave at him. Well today i noticed he was sitting on top of their garden shed which looks over our house and all our other neighbours. I was BFing at the time and thought that was weird but i also thought he really wouldn't be able to see anything except what looked like me cuddling baby...and i really dont want to start keeping my curtains closed during the day......
Anyway about 10mins ago he came running through my yard which i have just had top soil put down and grass seed laid, through my front door with his shoes on (dirty shoes) into my sons room and jumped in the single bed and said he was going to sleep....his grandma was right behind him and was very sorry.....and made him say he was sorry too...but now im wondering if i should keep my front door locked...My sons safety comes first......,i know the 8 year old is harmless but i also know they dont really understand what they are doing....his mum has just been over and has given me some chocolates and again said she is sorry.
In a way i find funny but in another way it freaked me out a bit.....

I keep my front door locked the whole time I'm home! My neighbour is harmless I'm sure, but he kinda just freaks me out a lil bit. We live in a flat that's attached to another and down a shared drive on a back section so you just don't know... Plus I'm in and out of the front room all the time, so I'm paranoid someone's going to come through when I'm changing Ashlee's nappy in the other room etc etc.
That would have scared the cr*p out of me even if it was an 8yr old child!
And you're probably right about him not being able to see anything while BFing.

I total understand that would freak you, and bub comes first maybe if you are going to be in a differnt part of the house, a way from the door for a while i would lock it, and i dont think you need to close your curtains.

I lived over the road from an autistic boy and he was harmless and quite often ran across the road to our house or into the next door neighbours place. Find out if he is fasinated by the baby and them maybe arrange with his mum to have him over with her to see the baby. I would be inclined to lock the door if you don't know the family all that well.

I would lock the door! The poor mum, though, that must be so hard!

Well it's either lock the door or catch him every time he comes through and send him on his way. I think I'd try locking the door for a little while to make sure a habit doesn't set in.

Even though I feel we live in a relatively safe neighborhood, and a lot of the time the same has been true in the past with me, I've never really thought of *not* having to lock the front door - the exception being a REALLY hot day when I'm trying to get air into the house.

I would always lock the door too - no matter how many neighbours you know there are always the opportunists out there who are either looking to get in and out and nick stuff - or worse.
With the boy, going over and seeing the mum and maybe taking baby to meet the boy properly might be a good idea. Autism is usually not a violent condition, unless they are out of their routine. He certainly sounds like an unusual chap!

could you go over and talk to his mum? i know the situation is kinda weird, but it might ease a little. and as someone else said, he may just be fascinated by the baby - once he sees it, no worries.

Deez - we live in West Aucks hun! enough said! (goes to check double bolt on front door )
Seriously though - That would freak me out too. I'm really careful about locking doors and not leaving windows open at the best of times, especially since Caitlin arrived. Our neighbour's little boy has Downs Syndrome and although my BiL's sister has it also and I understand the "condition" I'm still wary of him when he just sits at my front gate (and drives the dog nuts! grr).

Yeah I agree. I'd lock it even if its just to avoid the inconvenience of having it happen again. I'm sure they wouldn't take it as an offense.
I lived in a place with shared access down a long driveway and the neighbour's child was always trying to come and 'visit'. It was so creepy, I'd be standing at the sink all of a sudden he'd be standing there behind me not saying a word. *shudder*

Never use to lock the door but do now. Our house is on three levels and I was on the top floor getting Alex. When I came down a level I couldn't find Harry anywhere...then the door bell rang. It was Harry on the bottom level outside and I had no idea. We do not have a fence so it freaked me out a bit. Harry of course thinks he's very clever opening the door

Oh rough that Robyn...I grew up in the country (Opononi) and we never ever locked our doors in fact we could sleep with them wide open and now i live in a house with 2 sliding doors one in the lounge the other in the dining room. My house is open plan so they're only a couple of meters apart and i used to have them open all the time during the day before Lycan was born, now they are always locked closed and i only have some of our windows open...the high ones anyone can climb through the low ones....and now my front door is always locked and if the gge is up i lock the door that gives access to the house from the inside....
