Topic: Urinary Tract Infection Posted: 30 October 2006 at 5:25pm |
Okay so I've been having horrible shooting pains and when my m/w saw me today I did a wee sample which showed a slight trace of blood. She's sending it to the lab but we won't get the results until Thursday morning or something. I'm feeling rather yuck at the moment but I'm putting most of that down to tiredness + a bit of pressure feeling.
Question: for those of you who have had UTI, what were your symptoms?

It hurt to pee, you want to pee and nothing comes out yet you have the full bladder feeling.

Same as becks, the pain really sucks but you sometimes feel like you constantly need to go

I had UTIs all the way thru with my second, most of the time I didn't have any syptoms - main wee smelt stronger and was darker in colour with floaty bit in it (best way I can discribe it)
The time it was really bad i had bad pains down below (like period pain but more sorer) and when I wee'd it stung like hell, once again was very strong smell and colour. and I bled after wards (but this is when it was really bad)
I am amazed your midwife didn't give you some antibiotics to get rid of it quick because if un treated can get worse and go to your kidneys.
If you are still sore ring your midwife about it. Otherwise drink plenty of water to flush it out.

i dont get the pain but i need to pee a lot, and bladder doesnt empty like it should..i had a uti early on in pg....also felt bloated etc.
I had some antibiotics to clear it up, drank heaps and also did the cranberry juice - make sure it is the real thing (not 5% etc) - Ocean spray is the best.
Hope it clears up quickly. I dont like the sound of blood in it - could you perhaps go to your GP also? You can gt test done and results the next day normally.
not a nice thing to have I know...

Feel the need to pee lots, but not much coming out, as others have said. For me, it didnt hurt at all, so I reckon I would find it rather hard to know if I got a UTI while pregnant, since that has similar effects!
I also had a high temp, and an achy lower back...

I had slightly higher BP but still within normal, but the puzzling thing is that it's not hurting me to pee. The shooting pains stopped yesterday but since then I've had period-like pain/soreness on and off. This morning seems to be a lot better too, so maybe whatever it is is passing.
I guess she didn't give me antibiotics because there weren't enough conclusive symptoms - no pain peeing, no sore kidneys, tummy not sore when she poked around for Baby.....who knows what's going on!?

Oh she did say that if the pain settled in, we'd do something about it - that's probably the antibiotics I guess. And the blood trace was so small that she wouldn't have done anything about it usually, has only sent it to the Lab because of the pains at the same time.

It's sometimes hard to tell when you're preg whether the symptoms are a UTI or just baby putting pressure on th ebladder etc, but blood in the urine is a pretty sure sign of a UTI.
I would have thought she'd give you antibiotics in the mean time just in case as if it is a UTI and spreads to the kidneys there is a risk of prem labour. They can get a prelim result within 24 hours, but to get a definitive result they have to grow a culture which takes a couple of days.
So speaks the UTI queen - I have to take an antibiotic every day to prevent me getting them because I have them so often.

Yep. And then I wonder why my baby has a dodgy kidney - I guess she gets it from her mother

Well the pains seem to have gone today, now enters tiredness... again! Hopefully this means that everything has come right, or will soon. Emma you got me a little worried about prem labour. I read somewhere else that UTI can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Here's hoping that Krystiana won't be born until 2007!

Got my results back today (m/w has had 2 births in the last 48 hours?!) and there was NO infection - hooray! She said a tiny amount of blood in urine is pretty normal cause I'm making more blood etc etc ... maybe that's why for you, Trish.
The cramps and pains seem to have something to do with old c/s scar tissue stretching (and no wonder, I'm putting on a kg a week!! ). That settled down yesterday, hopefully that's the last I hear of that...
As for Ocean Spray cranberry juice UGH! I had a bottle of it over the course of Wednesday, hated the after taste (sort of bitter), and THEN read that cranberry juice is good for prevention but if you already have UTI it's not much use ... ah well no harm in a bit more Vit C for a day
Thanks ladies.

I can't drink the juice anymore either
My GP said right at the start that when I get sick of it (and he was sure I would), to just take a cranberry capsule - so I've taken once a day over the last month and am OK for now.
busymum, you can try that - I take one every morning with a glass of water.
