Topic: Concern about new generation credit cards Posted: 07 April 2013 at 12:32pm |
I've just been reading up on the new Visa/MasterCard 'paywave' system, where you don't even need to take your card out of your wallet, just wave it across one of the new paywave readers (transactions under $80 that is) and hey presto.
Well, it seems that it would be a no brainer if someone stole your card, to make purchases without even having to go to the trouble of trying to forge your signature.
I don't know about you, but $80 is a big deal in my world, not to mention the rigmarole of having to prove to the banks that certain transactions were fraudulent, and getting reimbursed.
Anyone else have any thoughts, or have had problems with the system?
If you have a card with a chip, you automatically have this paywave as well, and no, you can't 'opt out' of it.

Luckily where we are there aren't many places that offer it. It's more prevalent in Auckland & Wgtn according to the lady at the bank. I'm also wondering if we can lower the limit for the swipe.
I just make sure I know where my card is at all times.

I thought the same thing when my credit card arrived, meant to be more secure, hmmmmm right!! I dropped my wallet a few months ago and luckily it was found and handed in by someone honest but in the time it took me to realise, a few $80 purchases could have gone thru

Yeah, I put that in my OP, you can't opt out. The only option is to use an old non chipped eftpos card instead, but then lose the credit card function altogether.

You could damage the chip & then just use it for online purchases and the old eftpos card for normal use

Yep. I'm leaving my chipped card at home now, and just using my mag strip eftpos card out and about. But the mag stripped ones without a chip are eventually going to be phased out altogether, so there will be no choice in the end.

Im pretty sure that after every 2-3 transactions you have to enter your pin to confirm that it is you using the card - they cant just use it willynilly. And the onus is still on the retailer to proove that it is you doing the transaction, so you should still have the same protection you normally have.

Avidkeo, interesting theory, but nothing I have read suggests the PIN safety net at all, and the onus is on you to prove that any transactions are fraudulent.

i wonder if using a holepunch to damage the chip would stop it working but still let the card swipe

The chip isn't involved in the paywave system, there is an antenna which circles the card which does the paywave. And I think if a card were holepunched, no retailer would take it.

I don't think it's really much different, because if someone stole your card they could easily forge your signature anyway as hardly anyone checks it, plus a lot of places already have the no pin for under a certain amount.
Banks are pretty good at tracking things back if your card does get stolen or lost.

I tip a heard (but haven't tried as I don't have one of these cards) is to keep it in your wallet with another type of wave card, like snapper. Then the readers can't figure out which one it is so you have totake your card out of your wallet. Stops fraud with mobile devices. none of that helps a lost card though. But nothing helps with a lost card paywave or otherwise!
