I had some very sad news yesterday. A friend of mine's baby died of cot death. He was just 7 weeks old She woke up in the morning and saw that it was 9am and thought, woah Ben has slept for 12 hours! So she went in to his room, and there he was I am just so sad, and can't stop crying. The old saying "there, but for the grace of God go I" keeps popping into my head. Makes me feel even more incredibly lucky to have my beautiful boy safe and healthy and happy.

Sorry, I hope I haven't ruined anyones day, but I just needed to share.

Clare sorry about your friend. but have you seen on the news the latest about cot death. Maybe her little boy could be one of those children that is missing that seraton(sp?)
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I have seen it, and who knows.... how can they test to find out I wonder? Will they be able to test all newborns??? Or is it a post-mortem procedure?

I'm really sorry to hear about that Clare, my thoughts are with you and with them, and lots of as well !

As far as the testing for the lack of serotonin that they have been talking about in the news, they haven't developed a test yet as this factor has only just been discovered. They're hoping to have a test ready for general use in about a year I think, that could be done on all bubs - newborn or .. um, otherwise (ie: postmortem).

There have been quite a few times when I've thought, Ella has been sleeping for a long time, I don't want to check her incase something has happened

I'm so, so sorry for your friend Clare. You will be a great support for you and a shoulder to cry on. There are some support groups out there for cot death that she will be able to join when she feels up to it. :**hugs**: for all of you.

I'm so sorry for your friends loss, Clare. I know how you must feel as well, as a friend of mine had a stillborn baby last week.

Big hugs to you Clare

I also had a friends baby die of SIDS last week. She was just short of 6 months old and she was such a fighter. She was born at 25 weeks (I met them when Ashleigh was in hospital) and had fought so hard to be where she was and then just drifted off to sleep and didn't wake up    I feel sooo much for my friend as she lost another little prem bub last year to an infection. I really feel useless and want to do something to help her but I realise there isn't anything I can do.... sooo sad

Big hugs Clare. A close friend lost her gorgeous little six month old man to SIDS in February and it is just heartbreaking. Some things are just so hard to understand.

Im so sorry to hear.

Its so scary to think that even tho our babies are 3 months old and can move their heads with alot more ease now that there is still that chance of cot death it scares the crap out of me. Im forever grateful for my baby girl and my angelcare monitor!!

6 months Emma??? Oh my goodness, I didn't realise babies could still, well, you know.... at 6 months I thought we were out of the woods now.... Oh no, more to worry about.

Thanks so much for all your lovely messages. It has been a really sad few days, and my friend D is doing remarkably well. I will pass on your messages to her, she will appreciate it, esp from mums

I know Clare, it was such a huge shock. When I got the message to ring her DH I thought something had happened to my friend, it never occured to me that it could be one of the kids. She got up to check on him and he wasn't breathing and the neighbour who is an ambo officer tried to resuscitate him but it was too late.

I posted about it here somewhere when it happened back in February. It was so heartbreaking, I had stayed at their house 6 weeks earlier and got some gorgeous pics of Kalen and Maya, and then he was gone just like that. And he was their third child, fully breastfed, they don't smoke etc. She couldn't possibly have done anything more to keep him safe.

This is all so terrible, it used to scare the heck outta me checking paris cos she was a deep sleeper and goes blue-ish when she is in a really deep sleep. i used to make mike check her.

the scary thing is, i have heard that 6 months to 2 years is one of the worst times for SIDS as it is then that babies can move around their cots etc and are at bigger risk of suffocation and all that other stuff,
big hugs ladies.
Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja
