Topic: Flat heads? Posted: 15 November 2006 at 11:28am |
Mercedes insists on sleeping with her head facing the same way all the time, I suspect she was lying that way in-utero. They both have really flat-sided heads to start with but I;m worried that she will get an even flatter side.
So how can I convince her to sleep the other way? I tried a rolled up nappy under her shoulder to prop her onto her other side and all that happened is she went to sleep on her side with her head twisted back to her fave side which can't be too comfy!

yah but once she realises that its actually not that comfy...she will eventually sleep on the other side!! or facing up!!
Zaara used to be like that...sleep on right or left side....I stopped that by blocking bothside with rolled up cloth....and then let her sleep on right or left and then back to up....and touch wood her head is nice and round!!

Erin used to do that too, and we ended up taking her to a cranial osteopath that specialises is seeing little wee babies - it was because Erin had been cramped up the same way in utero, and so her muscles were a bit stuffed. The visit was a bit expensive ($75) but well worth it, and Erin has a full range of neck motion and uses both sides of her head when she sleeps (so it's nice and round!).

We might have to look at that if she keeps this up. I should take a photo of her, she looks hilarious all twisted up.
I actually thought Sienna would have more probs with her head and neck than Mercedes since she was the one that got stuck on the way out.

The lady I see is in Browns Bay though... but just PM me if you want her details, I've got them written down in Erin's plunket book I think.

Instead of putting the nappy under the baby('s shoulder), try under the mattress so that the bed is tilted, wait till she has been asleep for 10 mins then change head position. Worked for Olivia but every baby is most definitely precious and different. Good luck with the osteopath!

argh i hated this with the girls, Paris has the worst flat spot at the back of her head.. so much so i can't do certain hairstyles cos they look really munted.
Have you tired makingh er be dup the other way.. sometimes they like to focus on a certain thing or look towards light.. if you change it around they might look the other way. other than that.. i'd go with the osteopath too i think, cos once they get used to turning one way it can get worse cos after a while their muscles on one side don't stretch so much cos they are always in one position.. so it makes it hard to turn back then.

Thats exactly what was wrong with Blake. He never moved in utero - the whole time he was head down and crushed into side of my pelvis. I have taken him to THE MORGAN CLINIC..they do Gentle manipulations and are briliant and free. Not osteopathy or chirporactic. I am not too sure if they have one in Auckland??? You are in Auckland aye???
I also got a little head wedge which keeps him from turning his head.

Aha! Peace, might try that. I already have the entire set of phone books under her mattress to prop her up for the reflux, so might chuck something else under one side to tilt her.
Mercedes is so funny, I mentioned how she sleeps to the midwife and she immediately picked up which side she favours - even when she is lying on the floor or in the bouncer she turns her head the same way every time. So we might seriously have to look at some kind of osteopath or chiropractor or something.

I was going to suggest the same as Jess, as Amelia was the same in the early days - would only sleep with her head one way. Took her to the chiropractor and her neck muscle on the left side was all wonky from putting her head back while in labour. He fixed it, and next day she put her head the other way!

I was just going to say and i think it has already been sed....Try putting her toys on the opposite side, Oh and try putting her to sleep at the other end of her cot, so that when you approach her she has to look at you on the side that she doesnt favour, if you have a
mobile or anything like that also put that up on the side that she doesn't like.
Lycan favours his left so when i play with him on the floor i sit on the right side of him, i place all his toys to the right of him as well. I also give him alot of tummy time during the day....Since i've started doing this i have noticed he is starting to sleep on both side now.
