Topic: Tummy Sleeping - HELP! Posted: 13 December 2006 at 9:35am |
For the last two days Joshie has wriggled himself round in his safe-t sleep and we've found him asleep on his tummy. Regardless of how tight we do the blimmen thing up round his tummy, he still gets off his back and over. I'm not happy with him sleeping on his tummy, as I am aware there is still a risk of SIDS even at 7 and a bit months old. Also, we have a Dr Sprott cover over the mattress which may make it harder for him to breathe especially as he doesn't really turn his face when on his tummy and is pretty much face-planted face down on the mattress!! I don't know what to do - I see my options as being 1. remove the safe-t sleep and Dr Sprott cover and let him choose how he sleeps, or 2. safety pin the safe-t sleep to his clothes so he can't turn over!!
Please help!! All ideas and advice welcomed with open arms!!!

Clare, its easy for me to say it but dont panic too much, both my girls are tummy and side sleepers, Ashlyn still sleeps on her tummy but now she is older she knows to turn her head. We haven't had any problems. The Dr Sprott cover is meant to be something to help prevent SIDS. As Joshua is turning while in his safe t sleep I would guess he will be able to move if he is finding it hard to breath, babies do have fairly good survival instincts, would only imagine there would be a problem if there is a medical issue. Do you have a monitor in his room? My opinion and only mine ... I would think he would be safe, but may be still keep him in safe t sleep so he can get himself wedged anywhere in the cot, may also stop him moving too much and waking himself. Good luck with whatever you choose and try not to stress too much

We used 4 nappy pins for Ella with success. She wasn't bothered by them so I kept doing it until she was about a year old I think.
She was way too wriggly to go without it, we tried a couple of times and she'd wake herself up tangled in the bars or wedged in a corner!

At his age I'd let him go. If he's that strong, he'll be able to find air as he needs it
Is he well? Young children with tummy bugs find it much more comfy to settle on their tummy (something I learned from my Doctor, something about the intenstines(?) not being as stretched when lying on tummy).

Thanks everyone! I think I might just let him sleep however he feels comfy.... even if it is a bit scarey for mummy!!! I don't THINK he is unwell or has a sore tummy, but he never really gets grumpy so its hard to tell

Charlotte has just started flipping herself onto her tummy too but I am not too worried as she is strong enough to move her head to the side.
She actually sleeps better like this so I am not discouraging it!!!!

Connor is a natural tummy sleeper - we've given in and let him sleep on his tummy during his day naps otherwise he won't sleep during the day at all. He's strong enough to lift his head and moves it to different sides regularly. There are bigger factors for SIDS than just tummy sleeping - we are in a smokefree home, he doesn't share a bed etc. Andrew started tummy sleeping as soon as he could roll himself over. I figure since Nick (hubby) and I are both tummy sleepers there's a good chance the boys are too.

Ethan sleeps on his tummy during the day. He would love to at night time but I won't let him. I agree that if he can manage to wriggle himself around in the safe-t sleep then he should be ok on his tummy.

Thanks everyone - he really does seem to prefer sleeping on his tummy. And Jono and I do as well, so mebbe it's in his genes There are no other SIDS factors (smokefree home, doesn't share a bed) so he should be fine. He is strong enough - he is almost crawling, so I just need to chill out a bit!!

Mya has always been a tummy sleeper. from 0-4months we had a sponge thing (sorry no idea what they are called) which has 2 pieces of sponge and its designed to stop her rolling her stomach but once she learned to roll and was more mobile she managed to wriggle herself out of it and sleep on her tummy anyway. I was spooked by it at first but have come to realsie that thats how she sleeps best (and while i check on her several times a night to make sure shes ok) weve decided to let her sleep how shes most comfortable.
