Topic: How much formula... Posted: 26 January 2007 at 7:14pm |
Do your babies take at each feed? Mine only take 120-140ml most feeds, aside from the odd pig out where they;ll take maybe 180ml. They're growing fine, it just seems taht they haven't increased their formula intake at all and are still taking the same amount they were taking at 4 weeks old (only then it was expressed milk). They're also still taking teh same number of feeds (7 per 24 hour period)
Would be interested to hear how much other babies of similar ages are taking.

Hey Emma,
I usually give Olivier 100 mls per feed at this stage and sometimes he has around 120 mls. I met with plunket nurse this morning and she seemed to think that was around the right amount to feed him. I am still breastfeeding but only once or twice a day as I am running low on supply. Hope that helps

that sounds about right really - once they get up a bit older around 6 months they will probably increase but some babies never do, The very most my girls have ever taken from a bottle at once is 150 mls, at 7 feeds a day..
If they are gaining weight consistantly, and settling well (for them..) then i wouldn't worry. If they are hungry they will take more. they are still only little really

Yeah if they are still doing well, settled and putting on weight I wouldnt worry to much. At the moment Addison is only taking about 100mls if im lucky but she is still a little porker so plunket arent worried.

Toby has 3 or 4 bottles during the day (breast in morning and whenever else he will take it). I make up 120mls and he will usually finish that. If he gulps it all down I will make another 120mls and he has drunk the whole 240mls twice now - then wanted breast as well!

Thanks ladies! Makes me feel better to know that they are normal, coz some feeds I battle to get 120ml into them. Still I guess the best sign is that they are growing huger by the minute so they must be filling up!

Olivia was on 600mls (6 x 100mls) a day till she was 3 months then she increased it to 750mls (5 x 150mls) she has fluxuated when she has a growth spurt but otherwise it has remained the same, and she is NO lightweight!

Thanks Peace - am I right that Olivia is on Neocate also? Coz I did wonder if that made a difference to how much they would take?
And I guess if I work it out over the 7 feeds they are having per day it works out to 840ml which is quite a lot. Would love to have them drop the night feed and take more during the day, but they're just not keen on that!

GOD it has taken me days to get on to my own computer, for some reason this site is running horribly slow, especially on Hubby's comp and I can't log in!
I did have Olivia on a trial of Neocate, I ignored the side of the tin and just gave Olivia what she thought she needed. As per GP and everyone else under the sun that I have expressed my anguish to about Olivia's lack of formula intake. Let the baby be the judge of how hungry they are. I think it is always good to follow the "basic" principle that 600mls a day for a baby is the minimum amount they should have. Anything 50ml+ is a bonus.
Olivia isn't on Neocate anymore I did a big rant about it on the reflux board (oh me and MY rants!).
I stopped getting up to giving Olivia a drink at night when she was just taking 50mls and going to sleep, otherwise stick to it, they will come around (harder to get some sleep when it is twins though!).

Maddie is on 5 feeds per day and takes between 150ml to 180mls...though the last few days she's had a few 120mls as well.
