Who's taken their kiddies there? Did it help you? Did you get a GP referral or self-refer?
We are coming up to Auckland in a few weeks so thought we may as well take Hannah cos I have got to the point where I am struggling - her eczema is only on her face (mainly around eyes) and it has just flaired up again even tho we have been real strict on the milk products, so am wondering if shes allergic to something else Made an appointment with the GP - earliest appointment next Wed afternoon. Grrr.
Anyway, any comments would be greatly appreciated.

that wouild be good to know too Aimee, as our GP has guessed that all of Caitlin's issues could be down to a Wheat/Glutenm allergy. I'd like to get it checked for sure though.
How much are the appointments?
P.S
I hope you're gonna pop in for a cuppa when you're in Auckland

Definitely planning on catching up with everyone - just organising our itinerary at the moment!
Well I've just rung the clinic and made an appointment - easy to get an appt when I wanted, I probably could have got in next week if we were around. $280!! Eek, thats a lot of money but its just one of those things that needs to be done. If you have health insurance it will be less. I would definitely get her checked Toni cos she's had so many problems. Will let you know how we go.

We took her to a private allergy specialist. It cost a fortune (upwards of $600) for the initial consult and the follow up was a further $300 +. He basically did a skin prick test and told me what those meant (she had a reaction to peanut and egg but was safe with dairy and wheat) and sent us off for bloods. The follow up was basically him reading what the bloods meant off the sheet of paper and refering us to a dietician and perscribing an epipen. We were with him a total of about 10 minutes.
When we moved to Wellington we changed to another specialist down there- he was wonderful! He took a full medical history of both of us and our extended family. He was with us for over an hour and a half and explained so much to us- he was just wonderful, we got to ask all our questions and he was cheaper too. We are actually having her 3 year follow up with him again when we fly back in March as I dont want to go anywhere else.
If you want to know the place we went to in Auckland (if you either want to go to it or avoid it!) then just PM me.

Are you talking about the clinic in Herne Bay? Have been there with Maya to see Jan Sinclair and she is well worth every penny. The gremlins are booked in to see her on 13 Feb (next Tues). She runs the immunology dept at Starship and it takes months to get a public appt to see her so private is the way to go.
With Maya our GP referred us, the initital consult was $220, can't remember how much the follow ups were. At the first visit she took a history and did some skin prick tests, which were repeated at subsequent visits until she showed no reaction and then Jan referred us to Starship for a dairy challenge.
I don't think she'll skin prick the gremlins with them being so young (under 12 months allergy testing is notoriously inaccurate), but I more wanted to chat with her about the reaction they seemed to have to breastmilk and about how to go abot introdcing solids given their history.
PM me if you need to know anything, but IMHO it's definitely worth it

I think we have struck it lucky with Erin health wise, she doesn't seem to have any allergy issues, even though Coeliac's Disease runs in my biological family and Addison's Diseas runs in Roland's family. I would definitely take her to get checked out Toni, esp. if her issues do come down to a wheat and / or gluten allergy.

Emma, yep it is the Herne Bay clinic. Do you know how Jan Sinclair differs to Dr Crump? Have had 2 negative feedbacks about him (out of 2!).

I have no idea Aimee, haven't heard that much about him. Those "in the know" rank the top three paed allergists in Auckland as Dr Jan Sinclair, Dr Allan Liang and Dr Rohan Ameratunga (in no particular order). We saw Dr Liang when Maya was smaller but were referred to Dr Sinclair when she started having random hive outbreaks at about 20 mths or so, and because Jan runs the immunology clinic at Starship she is able to organise testing etc there fairly promptly. I've found her to be absolutely brilliant, she is great with the kids, very thorough and doesn't dismiss anything as irrelevant.
I can put some feelers out and see what others think of Dr Crump, but you could also check out the EBB allergies board and see what some of them think.
IMHO if you can get in to see Jan (and I know she has quite shocking waiting lists sometimes but you often get bumped up the list if she has cancellations) then I would.

OMG Dr Liang is still out there ??? LOL Sorry... I saw him when I first came to NZ and *everything* flared up - asthma, eczema, allergies, sinusitis... he was great I just thought he would be retired by now.

Yep, he's getting on a bit, but he is great on an intellectal level - doesn't have the same people skills or way with kids that Jan has but boy does he know what he is talking about! And he doesn't talk down to you either like a lot of specialists tend to do (the whole 'I am God' complex')
