Lycan was sick about 2 months ago and i gave in and let him sleep with me (REALLY BAD I KNOW) however, i am now trying to get Lycan to settle himself in his cot and sleep through the night again. It has been hard because i HATE it when he screams himself to sleep.

Anyway last night i put him in his safety sleep on his back and he went down straight away...yay...but about 40mins later he started crying, i left him to see if he would settle himself and he did...again yay...but when i went to check him he had rolled over onto his tummy....freaked the s##t out of me because his wrap was still on him tight.

I want to keep using the safety sleep but i'm not sure if i should because he is rolling onto his tummy. I have noticed he prefers to fall asleep on his back and then turn to his tummy....

Is he old enough to be sleeping on his tummy and should i stop using the wrap????

I was going to say this all in Kelpa's post but it ended up being to long......sorry ladies

My gut feeling is that if they can roll from tummy to back then they're old enough to choose for themselves.... can he roll that way?

As far as whether or not you should stop using the safety sleep that's totally up to you in terms of how comfortable you are with it. I personally would rather keep using mine as Alyssa always ends up rolling between the grates on her cot if I don't use it which means she won't sleep properly. When she's old enough to get herself out of that situation then maybe I'd stop using it.

If you were wanting to keep Lycan in the safety sleep longer, then my suggestion is to try positioning the safety sleep closer to the side he favours when rolling, rather than right in the middle where it's supposed to be. I know when I put Alyssa to sleep in her portacot during the day she always wants to roll, but if I place her closest to the side she rolls on then it stops her being able to do so and she just goes to sleep. I put her in her regular cot at night with the safety sleep and so far she hasn't rolled while in it..yet.

I used the SS with Maya till she was around 1 (I think, but it was at least that long) and I used to pin it to her singlet or nappy so she couldn't turn over. I know some people don't like the idea of pinning them to it but if you're keen the instructions on how to do it are on the SS packaging.

I was recently told by plunket that if they can roll over and hold their head up well then they are ok sleeping on their tummy. (I was really really worried about it too)
Same plunket nurse advised me to ditch the safety sleep as it might actually be waking him up more.
I took her advise and Benjy has slept longer and longer at night since!
Safety sleep worked a treat with Ella but I guess different babies like different things.
Hope this helps and good luck with his sleeping!

Same thing happened with Erin, Deez... we are probably going to ditch the SS soon, but if she rolls over we just leave her that way as she seems fine and happy to tummy sleep (and I know she is strong enough to lift her head etc).
