Topic: Sleep Routines for older babies Posted: 14 February 2007 at 1:27pm |
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what sleeps Joshua should be having at this age? At the moment he is having one sleep in the morning, one through the middle of the day, and bed at 7pm for 12 hours. Should I be looking at moving it to one sleep through the early-mid afternoon by now, or should we carry on the way we are, or.... HELP

I have nooooo idea what he "should" be doing as Erin is of course younger than Josh, but I would be tempted just to go with the flow - my feeling is that if they're tired, and their night time sleep isn't affected, then whenever the day sleeps are is still OK.
Although that said, I am wondering when Erin might go from 3 sleeps to 2...

My brain is full of holes but I'm *pretty sure* that Maya was still having two daytime sleeps by her first birthday coz I seem to remember planning her birthday for 3pm which was after her second afternoon sleep. She would go down around 10.30ish till around 12pm then from about 1.30ish till about 3pm.
Noooo idea when she went from three sleeps to two tho - my memory isn't THAT good!

Lachlan approached the 9 month mark and was still having 3 sleeps a day. I think it was about 10 months and I decided to try and stretch out the length of time he was up for during sleeps and he adjusted to it. They say babies do it in their own time.
Lachlan has two sleeps still now usually a total of 2 1/2 or 3 hours a day, well that's what it seems to be depending on how many hours he did overnights. Sometimes its 11 sometimes it 12. He makes up for it somewhere along the line.

Clare Leo is still having 3 sleeps during the day, in saying that though 2 of them are "catnaps" of around an hour. He wakes 6-6.30 in the morning and goes back down 8.30 (after the school bus run! ) -10.30. Then naps from 1-2 and 4-5. He goes to bed late though, around 8.30. Has just worked out that way with school, would like to move him to 2 naps but I have to be out between 2.25-3.15 so not sure how we will go about that? Whatever works I reckon!! Most bubbas dont seem to drop that 2nd nap til they are a bit older.

You'll know when Joshie wants to drop down to 1 sleep. He'll start being near bloody impossible to get to sleep and will only sleep for a short time. (Though in saying that, they seem to go through phases where they look like they are dropping a sleep but then go right back to being super tired and in need of two! ARGH!)

Hey Clare,
Rhiannon has a funny sleep pattern...for example today she only had 3 15min sleeps and didnt go down till 8.30pm
other days she will have 2 sleeps...1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon then down by 7pm for 12 hours...and then we will have days like tomorrow....where we are at playcentre for the morning...so will sleep for 3 hours in the afternoon then be down by 7ish.

Hi Clare a big head scratch myself at the moment.
For some reason Olivia (has 10-11hrs sleep at night - mostly 10!) needs that first morning sleep for 1.5hrs and her second afternoon for 2hrs. We have ditched the third nap of the day by staying up a little longer in the middle of the day, this actually works out really well.
Plunkets reccomendation for a 9month old daytime sleep/play needs is:
32-42 weeks (8 months) Up 3.5hrs x 3
Down 1.5hrs AM
Down 1 hrs PM
Safe to explore, cloth books, jack-in-a-box, motion toys.
42-52 weeks (10 months) Up 4hrs AM and PM
Down 1.5hrs AM
Down 30mins-1hr PM
Pyramid discs, stacking blocks, dolls, trucks, puzzle ball.
So according to them we are bang on!
