Topic: Very long boy Posted: 19 March 2007 at 10:03am |
Hey everyone, just a quick question - should I be concerned at how long Joshua is? It's just that he was measured the other day and he is 85cm long He's 10.5kgs, so quite lean, but I wonder if I should go see a doctor as according to all the growth charts he is really abnormally long. Probably just being a worrisome mama, but any advice would be greatly received.

Did you get him measured through plunket?

No, we did it at home, a couple of times as I couldn't quite believe that he was so long and thought I must have been doing it wrong. From the crown of his head to his heel, the way plunket do it.

Have a look in the plunket book at the measurements page, as he sounds perfect. A tall handsome young man. Are you tall or his dad tall? Don't panic too much.

lol Clare, he's fine! There is nothing wrong with being tall I know someone else on here had a girl who was about 80cm at his age - my Ella was quite tiny and is only 90 something cm now at almost 3

p.s their growth slows down over the second year too.. they usually do heaps of growing in the first year and then might only grow a few more cm's for a while and put on one kilo or so.

He'll be fine, Andrew is one tall boy 1m and he's not quite 3 yet and 15kgs. We aren't worries about Andrew as his dad is 6f 4 and i'm 5f 8 both above the norm for heights.

I wouldn't worry too much. Matthew was measured at 1 year & I think he was about 87cms & only 9.8kgs, so really tall & lean too. He's at the very top of the growth chart for height & below the average for weight, but he's happy & healthy, so I reckon that's all that matters!

Maya's always been tall and lean too, 10.5kg sounds fine for Joshua coming up one. Maya was only 8kg on her first birthday, and was 80-something (maybe 82?)cm, would have to look it up to be certain.

They seem to grow out and then up... so possibly he was just measured after an up growth spurt (Hannah always seems to be measured after an out one )
P.S. Plunket growth charts can kiss my bum

LOL Nikki!
I just looked up his height and weight and WOWZER!! That's very tall! But I wouldn't be worried about it, his weight is above average so there's some consistency there (and IMO Plunket charts are a bit "weighty" by that age anyway). I think you'll find his growth rate will decrease considerably in the next year. Just watch his eating at the moment because it certainly won't hurt him to gain some more weight if he's quite hungry (I'm not advocating fattening him up for the sake of it though).
He's due for a Plunket check about now anyway so the height and weight can be double-checked for you if you want. It will be interesting to hear what the Plunket nurse says actually. Don't warn her! Just listen to her say Oh.My.Goodness! like I did
PS If he's started crawling etc that will contribute to his lean-ness. And what's the rest of the family like in terms of basketball players?

Ah, I love Oh Baby! Thanks for the excellent advice chicks! I ended up phoning plunketline, just to check that I shouldn't go and get him tested for hormone problems (yes, worry worry mummy!), and they said to just watch his growth and if he grows more than 5cms more before he is 14 months then to take him in for a check with the GP. As for basketball players - me 5'4, Jono 5'11 - so average there, but on my side - brother 6'2, father 6'2, 3 x first cousins 6'2 or taller, and 6 x first cousins 6'0 or taller, so yeah, lots of big ones on my side. Jono's family are all shorty's apparently. His appetite is huge at the minute, so mebbe is going to grow outwards soon - either way he is beautiful and wonderful

I think the hormone thing is just if they don't stop growing at all, in which case just keep watching whether his measurements keep rocketting or if they follow the growth chart "curve".
