Topic: vicious circle? Posted: 19 March 2007 at 10:30am |
ok so how do i avoid this vicious circle..?
Gabriella feeds - for ages still....and falls asleep when done...
BUT if i then burp her she wakes and stays awake...but if i put her down she is half the time fine and other times unsettled cause of gas...but if i burp her she wakes...and then wants to feed again....and so on and so on....ends up being like 5 feeds plus of twenty mins each...so goes on for three hours or so often...(she is the neverending stomach!!!)
any suggestions???

this type of thin sucks. seriously. When she feeds, and falls asleep - is she still sucking well? watch her suck/swallow pattern, once she is sucking, sucking sucking and hardly ever onc ein a blue moon swallowing - it means she has emptied you more than likely and the milk flow has slowed, that's a good time to burp her, then offer other side, usually they will possibly not finish that side always.. (some pigies do though) and just start with that side next time. If she has just started this it may be that she is cluster feeding and doing this to increase your milk supply for her needs - in which case it usually does settle after a fe days. But babies easily get into the habit of not settling well.
When you burp her once finished, it's ok if she wakes, far better to get rid of wind than have her wake early cos she's sore. the main thing you need to look for is her feeding cues when she does this.. does she really want to feed.. ie, does she turn if something brushes her face? if you stuck your finger near her mouth would she actually suck on it or does she just like the idea of it? its really easy for them at this age to get waaay overstimulated and will want to feed as it comforts them, but then they get windy and sore tummies and overtired and yep it is a viscious circle. Once you have gotten her windup, if shes a bit grizzly chances are it's time for bed, not time for food again. wrap her up, put her to bed and give it a few minutes, mostly they will settle once wrapped up nicely and tucked down. it's normal for them to make a few grizzles just as they are going off to sleep (but not screaming house down lol.. am sure you already know the differences between those crys!).
I had a rule with my Ayja, after learning the hard way with Paris..that she was not up for any longer than an hour. Even if she didn't look tired, i would put her to bed, and it worked well.. I only wish i had that kind of will power and advice with Paris.

yeah she is feeding really well...and milk supply must be good as it is only the night time marathons where she totally empties me by 1am!!!
Today she fed from 8 30am on . off til 10 30am....put her down four times...burped her three times...fourth time she has TKOed...and has stayed asleep - without a burping tho....
she is a guts - feeds the whole time she is on...even if 45 mins...we counted yest and she mainly takes 15 - 25 sucks then swallows - if not between - and then keeps going....i can rub fingers upwards on cheek and she will start sucking again...and she will NOT latch off til she is ready....only time she really plays when latching is when tummy is about to let loose (bowels) and arms flail. She isnt a screamer so when she does we do pick her up....
ugh def a learning curve with the feeding thing....and now she is asleep im going back to bed...am having a lazy bed day today....

ok. next time she feeds have a look at her cheek and throat down below her ear and you'll be able to see when she swallows, ultimatly, you might notice when you just let down, there would be suck and swallow, suck and swallow cos the mik flows.. but usually aiming for around 3 - 4 sucks then a swallow. maybe up to 10 or so once things are slowing down. Chances are if she is sucking and sucking without swallowing then at the mo she might be feeding more often to increase the milk supply or she might be getting a bit uncoordinated sometimes.. or is just a piggie!.

Okay seems you got great advice to see if she is actually swallowing milk or not.
On the Burping front. I actually just use to lie her back on her back for about 3 minutes (look I didnt time it now okay. ) and then just slightly pick her up and let her lie on your chest (hopefully still fast asleep) and then just rub her back in a circilar motion. Gas should just come up and you are able to put her down still fast asleep.

Hi BS Krystiana does that (feeds, sleeps for 10 mins, wakes, feeds, etc) whenever she's growth spurting, especially at nights. She's coming to the end of yet another growth spurt right now. The burps seem to empty their tummy a bit for more feed... you will probably find this will do week-about for the next month and then will start settling after then. The biggest thing to watch is your own levels of exhaustion/hunger over this time because the more you rest and eat, the better off you'll both be.
