Dramatic First Birth

I don't want to put anyone off!!! My first birth was a breeze, just all the stuff that happened afterwards was pretty scary!

I had a drug-free (it bloody hurts)! water birth, it wasn't planned like that, I did want some gas but didn't have time, as nearly had lucy on the way to the hospital, in the car!

After I had lucy, I was giving birth to the placenta, and only half of it came out, I think that was more painful than the actual birth, there was loads of blood coming out, I thought this was normal. I was feeling really felt and wanted to throw up. The midwifes helped me onto bed where they gave me an injection to help the placenta come out, stil nothing, I was loosing more blood, 3 injections later and I was going into shock, so they decided to transfer me to CHCH womans, where they had to remove my placenta manually. I ended up staying in CHCH womans for 4 days after that while I had 3 blood transfusions, as I had lost over 2.5 litres of blood!!! Just wondering if I need to go to an obsetrician (sp?) aswell as have a midwife for this time round?? lets hope this when I have my next baby it won't be the same!!

Do you have a midwife yet? I would think that once you meet with a midwife she would be able to tell you whether or not you should be under an obsetrician and could refer you to one

lisha- i had a pretty dramatic first birth too- the labour itself was fine... but afterwards, 2 hours after the birth i had a heamorrhage. i was bleeding really heavily but thought it was normal too- i felt faint, sick etc... but didnt say anything as i didnt know what was happening, hubby was concerned and buzzed the midwife and i was seen straight away and thigns happened pretty fast from there and it is a bit of a blur. i remember lots of pushing on my tummmy, pain and drips being put in my arms- a rooom full of people doing all sorts of things to me. it was an amazingly frightful experience.
7 months after my birth i found out i was pregnant again, i didnt want anymore kids- i was terrified, i hated the pregnancy, i resented everything. but my birth went so well and i didnt have another bleed.
my bleed was different to yours, but i see an obsterician aswell as midwife in my pregnancy only a few times and in my last 2 births was given an iv drip straight after the birth to help contract my uterus for a minimum of 6 hours.
i must admit even with the drip i was still really scared in my last two births but fear is only natural after going through a scary time. i had positive outcomes thankfully- and i hope you have a great birth this time aswell- it makes a huge difference

Awwww big hugs to you too! It really shakes you up, and takes abit to get over!! Thanks for the advice, not haven't got a midwife yet, will go the the doctor this week and better sort out a midwife after that. Have any of you used the same midwife as before?

I had trouble with my placenta the first time around too, only mine didn't get stuck in, it tore off the wall in a hurry and made me start haemorraging! I ended up having a c/s for my first birth and that meant an automatic referral to ob in my second pregnancy, at around 28 weeks. He offered to conduct my c/s if I needed it the second time around (which thankfully I didn't).

Placentas change from pg to pg so I bet you'll be fine with your new baby. But I suspect you'll get an ob referral just to cover all bases. My 2nd birth went so much better (and my 3rd even better again), and I hope the same for you.

oh my that does sound traumatic.
im sure once oyu've talked to your mw and explained your first birth they should know whether there is a need to refer you or not??
