Topic: Ear infections Posted: 01 April 2007 at 2:57pm |
Has anyone else had a baby that is prone to ear infections? This week Mercedes ear has been weeping green mucous. I took her to the A and E on MOnday and he told me to leave it and see if it fixed itself (WTF?) so I took her to the GP who prescribed some Sofradex drops. She's now had 3 full days of drops and her ear is still gunky. The GP wanted to see her again tomorrow if things hadn't improved.
So what happens now? Mona had huge problems with her ears as a baby that has left her with a moderate level of hearing impairment but as I didn't know Willie when she was a baby (I was still in school I don't know how it started and he is pretty vague in what he can remember. I guess I am just worried Mercedes will have the same problems.
Any suggestions on things I can do to help her? I've been keeping her ear dry and using the drops.

Antibiotics!? What in the hell are they playing at? Olivia went straight onto amoxycillin and was cleared up in days. Go slap someone into action with your bad self Emma, don't put up with that bollocks!

Pick me. Andrew got them all the time (so did I as a baby) at least once a month. The only thing that helped was last year Andrew had grommets put in and since then (he had them put in Feb last year) he has not had 1 ear infection. Sofradex should clear it up, but I was told by our ear dr that it should only be used if an antibiotic doesn't work first (maybe her one is quite bad). If they continue or are bad ask for a referral to an ear, throat and nose dr (you have insurance so you would see one fast, thats what I did) and see what they say about grommets - the family history would say to me that she would need grommets (and its only a day surgery not over night ).

Sofradox is a type of antiboitic for ear infections but is very strong and can lead to deafness.

I think they are trying to see if it is bacterial or viral. REmember when it is viral AB's arent going to work for it. Maybe becacuse it is green they think it is a viral? And they trying to see if her immune system can fight it off herself?
What about going to see a homeopath if the dr doesnt do anything.

Sorry but an ear infection is never viral. If you try to allow the immune system to fight it, it can cause deafness. I have learnt so much about them with Andrew having them so often.

Jacob was pretty much a walking continuous ear infection from July last year until about december, which has affected his hearing a little. They just keep pumping him full of antibiotics, as they won't do grommits before 18mo. He actually, touch wood, hasn't had one since before christmas, but if we start off having them again this winter, we will pay to have them done, rather than wait to go public. My nephew had them bad, and they were pretty much left untreated (lazy sil), and he is nearly 3, just had grommets and is beginning to talk, he has never spoken, such was the damage. Charlotte has had her first, and the dr left it, but I had to take her every day to the drs since wed to keep an eye on it, apparently they do clear up on their own, but I wouldn't be keen on that happening again... I would be pushing to get something done, Emma, it really affects so much. balance, speech and hearing. Poor wee bubba!

I'm going back to the GP tomorrow. Our GP is great, she was horrified that the A and E doc recommended waiting. She did say tho that some external ear infections can cause mucous and not affect hearing etc. and they can resolve on their own but the fact that hers hasn't means it is probably middle ear.
Interesting to hear that about the Sofradex too Mummy_Becks. We used to use drops called Colymicin (sp) for Mona but apparently they don't make those anymore. I will mention that to the GP tomorrow. My brother had grommets, and Mona had them too (altho hers failed and she ended up with two failed myringoplasty as well )
I guess I'm just a little paranoid what with the family history and my Mum pushing me coz ears were the one thing she never messed around with when we were kids - even if she damn near knew we were just pulling a fast one she'd still take us to the docs just to be 100% certain.
Annie - fingers crossed wee Jacob doesn't have any more infections!

I think the ear dr said long term use of it can and if using the drops when you don't need to can lead to deafness. We only had to use it twice with Andrew both time we were cautioned by the pharmist only to use it for a certain number of days (probably as Andrew was quite young).
I pushed for grommets as I had them put in when I was just over 1 (that was in Oz). I went private to see the specialist and he told me that he would do the op public (to save us money) as he would see us about the same time he would see us privately.
You sound like you have a good GP Emma (with all the problems your girls have had) so i'm sure her giving you the Sofradex was the best thing. I know with Andrew once he had the grommets in his speech just took off and now we can't shut him up.

Poor Mercedes has an awful cross eye and a weepy ear - I feel so sorry for her! Seeing the eye doctor in a couple of weeks tho and hopefully will get the ear thing sorted this week too.

When my girls had ear infections at the end of last year, Briona was given meds and Hannah wasn't - because she wasn't complaining of any soreness and the Doc felt (after checking her ears) that she was over the worst and her body was self-healing... in other words, didn't need the support of AB. Briona's wasn't, so she got meds.
Ear infections are not viral but they are often caused as a result of a cold (the tubes block up)... but I'm guessing you already know all that Emma.
