Miss Ella is 6 1/2 months old and on 3 meals of solids a day, but since getting a cold she has refused her solids (for 2 days now, and the day before then ate very little).  I'm not panicking because she's still breastfeeding as often (and judging by my appetite, still drinking as much, if not more).  Though it's a right pain in the butt that she needs night feeds now because she's not getting those solids in.  I know it's really normal (but still worrying) for babies to go off their milk when they have a cold, 'cause it's hard to suck with a blocked nose, but what's this going off her solids thing about?

Andie, Brenna has a cold at the moment too and yesterday she refused her solids which is totally unlike her. I think that at this age, milk is definatley the most important form of nutrition. I guess just keep trying her with the solids and maybe go to the doc if you're worried. I'd much rather be told by a doctor that everythings fine than sit at home and worry about it.

Hope things pick up for you and Miss Ella

think about when you have a really icky cold and are really stuffed up, do you like to eat? do you like anything mushy, or something that you can chew and swallow quickly so you can breathe again. and does anything at all taste good? i am guessing that nothing tastes good, you don't feel like eating much and that certainly nothing that is mushy of gluggy that atkes alot to swallow or doesn't let you breathe while chewing. as gross as that sounds..

It's the same for babies, you can try a couple of saline drops in her nose before feeds or bed etc if you want to loosen things up so they aren't so snotty, but chances are, she'll come righ tin her own time. The fact she's still drinking and drinking well is all good. Most kids go off their food no matter how old they are when they have colds.

Have you got baby Vicks Andie? It's at Pak n Save otherwise. That should help her be a bit more comfy.

My guess is that Ella's prefering your milk because it's warm, easy to swallow... actually she might have a sore throat? But it will be best for her anyway. Sorry chick! The nights should right themselves in another day or so.

Me and Ethan have nasty colds as well, and neither of us are eating much, Ethan is usually a vacume and eats everthing and for about 4 days hasnt had much, is just starting to show interest again, he has also gone off his milk a little, still drinking just a lot less each feed, but he has plenty of wet nappies and apart from the cold is reasonable happy,

hopefully Ella will feel better soon.

...he he... giggling at the description of Ethan being a vacuum!  Cute!

Thanks for the reassurance, Ladies.  Sounds like the germs are doing a round - hope Brenna, Ethan and Natalie are all better soon.  Yeah I'm doing all the baby cold tricks.  I guess going off her solids could either be rather good for her or rather bad, given her bowel problems.  I know lots of babies get constipated after a period of eating less or not at all, so I dread if it makes it even worse (can it get any worse?!?) but there's also a chance that this fast of hers could clear her system out (given that she's still getting meds for constipation).

OK another question - how to get vit C into a baby?  I know the body doesn't store it, but does it still process it in breastmilk?  It must get to them somehow if theyr'e able to absorb iron, and we know babies can absorb that well.  I've squeezed and strained some OJ and given her some very diluted juice, but have to go easy as citrus and reflux aren't a good combo.  All the foods she gets (or used to) have had the vit C cooked out of them, as it dies at something pathetic like 40 degrees.
