Tuesday was possibly one of the toughest days of my life. We had to make the decision to put our little cat to sleep. I know that there are people out there that will think its just a pet, but for us he really was one of our babies for the last 14 years.
He had been sick for a long time, and we probably knew that we would have to make a decision sooner or later, but it didnt make it any easier. I feel really empty and am pretty devastated, feel a bit like I am auto-pilot each day and am emotionally exhausted. Poor DH is heartbroken too, and we are both struggling to make it through each day at work, only to come home and find that we both sub-consciously look for him to feed him - he normally greets us at the car howling his head off to be fed, so its a bit strange him not being there.
I have never lost someone I love (I am very lucky to have parents / granparents still around) and have never really had to deal with greif in any way, so feel like I dont know whether I am normal, or just being a drama queen or what...
Know it will get better - but at the moment its pretty sucky.

Sim Sam i know excatly how you feel...i had to put my cat down a couple of months ago...i had had him for close to 7yrs....and even now i still sometimes look for him.
it does get easier and the pain does subside, and you did the right thing by him.
I now have luther in a little box ontop of our computer table...just waiting for when we move...and then we are goingto bury him in the new garden

Oh no Simsam, it's perfectly normal
It's so hard to lose 'someone' you love, and our pets are so much a part of our family. I always said to DH that if any of our animals was hurt badly, or sick, we'd let them go ...but I tell you, last year when our cat Jazz was hit by a car, I threw my credit card at the vet and told him to do whatever it took!! (She's perfectly fine these days, and thankfully, avoids cars a bit more than she used to). We love them to pieces our animals.
DH and I had a budgie, Monty, and he was so cool. We'd leave the radio on for him during the day, and by the time we came home at night, he was off repeating what he'd listened to during the day ...and if we had people over, he was always chipping in on the conversation. He was hilarious, and just such a cool bird.
Even DH shed a tear when he died The house seemed so quiet and empty after he was gone too. It was horrible.
I'm so sorry Simsam

Big hun. Im so sorry for your loss.
Death is an emotional roller coaster ride. You are not a drama queen. You will feel all sorts of horrible feelings
With time; the pain does heal. 14yrs is a long time. Keep hold of the memories, they can never be taken from you.
Thinking of you at this sad time

Big big .
You are totally normal, we had to get our beloved tess (dog) Put down on boxing day a few years ago and we bawled like babies at the vets, and for many days afterwards.
Pets are so much like children and i can understand where you are coming from.
Thinking of you, I'm so sorry you had to go through it.

Big
I can relate a couple of years ago we put down our Saint Bernard. It was such a hard time for all of my family. My dad drove him to the vets and mum followed in her car for a good 1/3 of the way just so she could watch him through the back window. When dad got to the clinic, the vet came out and took Baxter and said to dad, I will catch up with you in a few weeks. (meaning payment) Dad got back in the car and cried. I have never seen my dad like this. It was like putting down my brother.

Hon, this is an awful thing to have to go through. Losing a cat for many people is losing a member of their family. I still get upset over the loss of my darlings, and one of them was over 4 years ago.
Big hugs, it does get a little easier every day.

Aw hon, I'm a right proper sook when an animal dies too. And from the replies here already, we're in good company! I've never made that call yet - it's always been someone else's decision (family pets), but I'd still blub away every time! It's the kindest thing to do for the pet, though. It'll get better.

Big hugs Sam! That is the exact reason I don't do pets - I can't handle losing them We hat a cat for 15 years and eventually had to put her down and it was absolutely devastating.
Thinking of you.
