Topic: First Midwife Appointment Posted: 24 May 2007 at 11:30am |
Hey people
I have finall found a midwife, after weeks of trying and have a home visit on Saturday morning.
Just wondering, what should I expect from my first midwife appointment.
I am approx 9 weeks.
Thanks
Tara

UMMM *thinks back 7 months!* i think she will take bloods (or order them) and fill out paper work and just get to know you a bit but i think thats about it. Oh and she might take your BP etc. I think it all depends on the MW too but the routine will kinda stay the same with the added pee-on-a-stick later down the track until you get to something like 15 weeks and then she will start to listen to bubs heartbeat and check bubs possition from then on.
Hope that helps

Hi Tara there are a couple of threads like this already, if you have a minute you might like to do a search. The long and short of it is that it largely depends who your mw is and where they are situated. Enjoy the appointment!

Yup, some MW don't take blood, but refer you to the blood place. Some will weigh you, others won't. At this stage it is more the meet and greet variety, filling in forms as they don't get paid for visits till you are 14 weeks.
Wow - a home visit! that is pretty rare before baby arrives!

i always had home visits with my mw when i was pg. there may have been the odd time i went to her though. it may have been cos i was out in the wops and i didnt drive.
for the first visit it was kinda meet and greet but she also took a breif family history and asked if there were any problems that ran in the family and hat my mums pgs and births were like and stuff like that. i as also weighed had my bp taken, and learnt about peeing on a stick and reffered for a scan as no-one had any idea ho far along i was(there was no lmp dates.i had bloods taken as soon as i found out i was pg at the docs.

haha im thinking back 5 and a half years or something, i had my first visit at 12 weeks, she took blood asked medical history questions etc and i got to hear babys heartbeat....that was the coolest thing (until the scan, then until she started kicking me, then until she was born etc etc ) and i remember walking home and all i could hear in my head was her heart beat....
Im sorry, ive got a bit teary eyed just remembering my big 5 year old being so small! must go and look at my darling
enjoy your appointment, its exciting huh
