Topic: Burping and Hiccups! Posted: 06 June 2007 at 1:56pm |
Sam gets the hiccups all the time!
Do I need to try to burp him better? Do they hurt him or annoy him? Sometimes he spills a bit when he has the hiccups.
Probably a silly question but I honestly have no idea!
Also, do babies need to burp every single time they feed? Sam is good at the halfway burp, but sometimes he doesn't do one when he's finished feeding. Do they always have something to burp up? If he doesn't burp after a few minutes do I need to keep trying?
He is a bit spilly at times, and I feel like I am wiping his face more and more each day.
Also, in the first week he had poohed every time I changed him but now it seems to only be every third or fourth time. It's really runny and quite smelly when it does eventually come out. Is this normal?
He has been quite grizzly for the past few days, but not too bad. He is still sleeping ok and doesn't really cry much.
I know I'll get the hang of these things eventually, but it's good to ask you ladies!

James used to get the Hiccups all the time when he was little it doesn't hurt them as they used to get them while in the womb to.
Burping wise my midwife told me at the time not to try anymore than five minutes and that will come out the other end if they don't.
As for the pooing question I can't remember what he was doing poo wise that far back sorry.

didnt sam hiccough a lot before he was born too?
what danni-chick said re the burping sounds right to me - if he has wind he'll let you know eventually. one of my boys was a good farter so didnt need burping so much.
the pooh thing is tricky tho - are you still bf or on formula cause it will cause a diff. bf poop will be runny tho.

You can give him some gripe water if his hiccups are bothering him.
With the burping - hmmm Ashleigh was a shocker to burp, sometimes we would spend up to 45 mins trying to get a burp out of her. But if we didn't then she would wake up shortly after going down, really upset with wind so it was something we needed to do. It really came down to finding a good way to burp that suited Ashleigh. I guess if he still awake and not drawing his legs up then maybe he doesn't have wind?

Hiccups are generally nothing to worry about and don't bother the babies. Poo getting less regular is good and spot on! Burping is not always required, especially if he's still having breastmilk (not sure how that's affected with EBM). If he doesn't seem uncomfy after a feed and has no burp coming, don't bother with it.
He'll be growth spurting at the 2 week mark, which may be why he is more grizzly? Just mention that and the more spills to your mw. Sometimes it can be reflux, sometimes it's just a spilly baby.

hey hon, re poos, very normal for the frequency to change, BF'ed babies can poo as little as ever few days and that si still considered normal, I think though they should be popping something out at least everyday....but every 3-4th nappy is perfectly fine, as is every nap.
DO you have little seed like things in his poos? If they are nice and yellow most of the time with little seeds then that is just perfect, Sam is receiving and processing your milk just like he should be

With the poo's Josh went from every change to now out to 10 days without a poo. He is exclusive BF so we have no problems with that, other than the clean up afterwards . We still give Josh Gripe water if he gets the hiccups. He was a hiccup baby inthe womb but the odd time they annoy him he gets a bit of gripe water settles him right down.

Renee, my Sam gets the hiccups a couple of times a day. DH always comments on how violent they look but it doesn't seem to bother her too much. If she has a particularly bad case she will growl after the hiccup which is hilarious :) She had them the same amount in the womb.
Also my midwife told us if we couldn't burp Sam in a few minutes then don't keep trying for ages. Sometimes you just have to put them down without burping them otherwise you would be there for hours. I find that if she won't burp, if I put her down for a little while she will grumble when it starts to bother her and when I pick her up she usually lets rip :) Not ladylike little burps either, trust me, this child could be a sailor!
Re; the poos. She used to do them at every change, but is now more like every 3rd or 4th as well. It is almost a relief :) Breast feed babies can go up to a week without pooing and it is not a problem apparently, so I certainly wouldn't be concerned with every 3rd or 4th nappy. Also I noticed that during a growth spurt it got really revolting and smelly, which would co-inside nicely with his age as they have them around 2,4,6,8 & 12 weeks.

LOL ella has hiccups a lot too and she had them inside too!!!
if she didnt burp i would put her down for a while and then if she squirmed, cried etc i would put her back up on shoulder and she would burp pretty much straight away - heck still does that now!!!
for a laugh go read our march mummies thread....gigantapoops are common for those breast fed bubbas - and the mega ones come once evey 6 - 12 days...OMG we seriously talk about pooping!!! LMAO!!!
