Topic: Night waking? Posted: 23 June 2007 at 8:48pm |
For the past couple of weeks, Mercedes has woken suddenly an hour or two after going to bed for the night screaming at the top of her lungs. I go in, pick her up and pat her back, occasionally she brings up a little wind, and then I put her back down with her Peter Rabbit and she goes back to sleep.
Does anyone else's little one do this, or does anyone have any suggestions what might be waking her? I thought it might be the liver I had introduced to their diet so I stopped giving it to her but still she wakes. It's no big deal coz she settles again quickly and sleeps all night, but she screams like she's in pain and I feel sorry for the poor wee girl

Ethan has always done that, he wakes screaming almost exactly 2 hours after he goes to sleep each night, I quick burp, a cuddle and he is back down for the night. I have no idea what its all about, I just know he will do it so I dont go to bed until he has got it out of his system...strange oct babies

You haven't changed anything else in the diet? Seems like the most obvious problem given its Mercedes.

Teehee, poor old Mercedes, she's getting quite the reputation
Nope, haven't changed anything else in the diet, in fact they've been pretty much living on kumara coz I ran out of ice cube trays so had to put a heap in the fridge and that's all they've had for about a week lol. They've upped their daytime formula consumption, but as I've dropped the dream feed it kind of evens out, so I'm stumped as to what it could be?

Emma she may be too hot? If she is easily settled i guess you can rule out night terrors. Sorry not much help

Ollie has had patches where he has done that - about 40 mins to an hour after going down. He just screamed too but then settled quickly once I went in. He has stopped it again now so I don't know what it was. Hopefully it will just be a wee phase and will stop soon.
It is good that she settles quickly again afterwards. ( and I always thought better at that time of the night than three am or something!!!)
Good luck.

She would be too young for night terrors I think. I guess it just takes her system a bit longer to alleviate burps?

So far so good tonight, I put Sienna down first to give Mercedes a couple of extra minutes to get any wind up and made sure she had a big burp before I put her down.
It's bizarre - maybe it is an October babies thing lol!

James is doing this too and waking in the middle of the night and then waking up at 5:30am and not wanting to go back to sleep till he's had breakfast etc. Last night was the first night he slept through for a week and a half I don't know why he's doing it. He is screaming in his bed at the mo and am just about to get him up it is very frustrating as he's been a really good sleeper till know oh well I'm sure he will get over whatever it is.

I really do think it could be night terrors. According to the sleep consultant we used, they start around 4mths and Elle certainly started getting them at that age. Night terrors start with a roar...the baby will absolutely scream. If you go in they may appear awake but are not. The best thing to do is to ensure they are safe and leave them as if you hold them they may wake and be terrified. If you leave them they will simply stop mid scream and continue sleeping. If it is night terrors it should end as promptly as it started within a min of 60 seconds to a max of 10mins. Elle's usually last 5mins. It is very common for babies to get night terrors if they are overtired at bedtime. They do not harm babies and children have no memory of them in the morning.

She probaby is overtired when she goes to bed as their daytime sleeps are pretty scrappy at the moment, but she is definitely awake rather than screaming/grizzling in her sleep, she gets excited when she sees me, it's almost like she just wants reassurance that I'm still around.
Maya used to have night terrors as a toddler, they were horrible, I used to have to slap her to wake her up coz she was so hysterical but fast asleep.

Once or twice Elle wakes after the night terrors so that could be what is happening with Mercedes...
