Topic: bottle feeding/sleep help please! Posted: 01 July 2007 at 6:55pm |
I have been feeding Kaleb formula only for about 5 weeks now and have just seemed to find one that works ok for him but I think I have a problem :
He takes about an hour to take his bottle (is having the recommended amount on the tin) - sometimes he takes about 50ml on the trot then we have to wind him which can take a while and then he gets really fussy with rest of bottle.
Is this normal? (I am thinking it should not take that long at pretty much every feed!)
What can I do? Should I change the teat type (he's currently using Avent with no. 2 teats) or the number of holes (don't really want him to get more wind though)
Is it a sucking problem perhaps? Do plunket help with bottle feeding?
The other problem is that he only goes for a half hour nap after his bottle and then is awake until next feed (about 3 hours). I try not to stimulate him (leave him in the cot...) too much but still he sometimes falls asleep when I try to give him his next bottle (then continues repeating the cycle). Could this be linked to how long he takes to feed? (I should mention that he sleeps pretty well after his 1pm feeds and is only really like this in the am)
Please help me! Any advice/suggestions very gratefully received

Perhaps he has a full tummy after his feed & has had too much? Maybe trying less formula than recommened for his age(some babies dont need as much as the say)
As for sleep maybe try keeping him up after the feed & stimulating him- rather than straight down on a full tum.
Hope that helps a bit

Faraway we have the same problems at night time, usually until 2am, Sam sometimes takes 50 mls then is fussy for the rest. I try to get him to take it and he spits it out and then looks for it again! It's very frustrating and like Kaleb it sometimes takes up to an hour to feed him again. Sometimes he will take the full 150 and then an hour later be hungry again! Or, he will fall asleep after only a little bit, so I try to keep him up a bit and he won't wake up.
Sam sleeps really well during the day, I can feed him, burp him, put him back to bed and he's asleep in 5 minutes and sleeps for 3+ hours.

Plunket were great for me with bottle feeding advice. Fay was taking over an hour each feed to start with, getting a lot of wind and making a sort of smacking noise, Plunket recognised this I had no idea I had never fed a baby before, and we were referred to speech therapy within a week, who were great with advise re teats, size, feeding position and feeding routine
Good luck

Rhyley is bottled fed. He doesn't stop half way to burp and drinks his fill in the first offering. If I offer after he burps hes not interest, or screams before hes burps for his bottle. I found this didn't make wind any harder to get up and i Kaleb is ok with getting his burps up he might be like Rhyley and like to have his fill in one sitting.
This might explain why hes not sleeping long because he is still hungry even if he won't take the bottle a second time.
I am not too sure how old Kaleb is so I don't know if you need to use a fast flow teat.

You know Ann that makes a lot of sense to me now. I think Sam might be the same. I find if I just give him the whole lot and burp him at the end he seems to be happier, whereas if I pull it out and wind him and try to give it to him again, this is when he gets fussy.
I kept pulling it out as everyone said 'Oh you have to burp them during their feed'.

It depends on Kaleb's age I guess as you haven't said how old he is! Ashleigh was terrible when first home from hospital and would also take around an hour to feed as we definately needed to burp her 3 or 4 times during and it would just take forever If he is ready to go up in teat size then you may find he is actually getting more wind from having the no. 2 teat as he is sucking harder to try and get the milk out. We found similar problems as you are describing when we needed to change the teat though so you could always give it a shot.
Sorry I can't help with the sleeping as Ash has always slept well

I'm not saying you need to switch bottles or teats necessarily, because I know the Avent system works wonderfully for many people (as we started on it too), but we eventually switched to the newer Tommee Tippee 'Closer to Nature' bottles and I could not recommend them enough. Their design is meant to be more 'breast like' and the teats are lovely and soft / flexible, and Erin took in a lot less air with them too.

Thanks for your replies. Kaleb is 11 weeks old today. I don't pull the bottle out to wind him - he tends to stop himself after the first 'go' for a burp and we've always fed him until he stops himself before burping. Sometimes he brings his wind up easily and sometimes it takes a bit of time and effort on our part. I moved him from no. 1 to 2 teats a few weeks ago (when we had the same problems) and it seemed to settle for a little while (i.e. he'd feed in 30mins) but now is back again which is why I wondered if I should try the no. 3
Glow - I don't put him straight down after a feed unless he has fallen asleep during feed and I can't wake him. I have been working really hard on the feed, play, sleep routine and its only been the last couple of weeks where he has started to fall asleep in feed (even though he's not been that good at sleeping during the morning at all)
I should also add that he has always taken more than the formula tin recommends (only now has settled to his age bracket) and he is a hungry wee thing. We stop giving him his bottle when he refuses it and this sometimes means the next feed is bigger (again we take cues from him). Even though he does take so long he almost always finishes his bottle give or take 20ml.
Yesterday he woke up really hungry and took his 220ml then a top up of 40ml but still only went down for 30mins so what's up with that?

Just throwing ideas at ya hun. By no means an expert but know how frustrating/upsetting it can be!!
*What type of formula do you use? Heinz has a "hungry baby" formula
*Different teats & bottles?
As with sleep it sound like he hasnt learnt to adjust to the different sleep cycles & therefore wakes fully after only the first cycle & doesnt resettle. I would aim for getting the sleep thing sorted first, if he is putting on weight etc with feeds do not worry to much about the wind etc. They will burp when they need to & drink what they need
Also if it gets too much, talk with your well child provider doctor etc to get more ideas, advise & suggestions.

I just phoned Plunket line and they asked Q's about his sleep patterns - said for his age he should only be awake for 60/75mins and that because he awake for so long feeding then his sleep was mucked up and then next feed wouldn't work (he overtired, falling asleep...). When I told them he feeds the same even after a 7 hour night sleep they suggested trying a faster teat and also making sure I didn't tighten the lid on his bottle too tight (which I've been doing ) DH was feeding Kaleb while I was on phone so I raced out and said try this and he took 120mls in about 10mins. I feel like such a bad mum!
At least if he takes the feed quicker I'll be able to get him down within that timeframe and then hopefully he'll sleep in the morning too (just quietly I hope that means he'll still sleep during the evenings/night!)
