Topic: Playing with baby Posted: 06 July 2007 at 2:51pm |
Gina is almost 5 months old and I'm at a bit of a loss how to play with her. She gets quite frustrated with tummy time as she'd like to crawl but can't yet. She does not like lying on her back or sitting for long periods either and likes us to carry her around. I tend to do things like show her toys and press buttons etc to show her what they do (she loves that and often tries to grab them etc); read books; bounce her on my knee and watch baby einstein dvds with her. I feel she's a bit young still for her Jolly Jumper. Any ideas? We were thinking of getting her an exersaucer this weekend. What do you do/did with your 5 month old?
(thanks Fiona for the topic idea )

Mine loved the Jolly Jumper around that age, but with Gina being a bit early she might be a wee bit small yet. Other than that they liked lying on their backs under the playgym, and I'd alternate the toys so they had some variety, and also sitting with a bowl full of rattles, blocks and other small toys for them to fish thru.

Gabriella is in her JJ already - she loves it...and i say " bouncy bouncy" when she bounces or i make it go etc
I let her just sit in the rocker with lights and music on. I put her under the FP bear kicker arch thingey and tell her to kick kick and then clap and say - yeah Ella!!! she loves that!!!
Im not reading to her yet but will....
she is ok with tummy time but gets bored. She loves to sit on my knee and we press the pooh radio - press nose to make it go so i press her hand and tell her what to do...and we sing along etc...
We dont "watch" tv - but if it is on while she is on my knee she will giggle at it...I also turn her to face me each afternoon and we "talk" about her day - she squeals and talks to me....
yest on my knee we made up a song about her feet that had her in hysterics so i went with that...stupid song that i will only do at home!!
just that kinda thing....I also try to alternate the toys...and she is awake BIG time during the day so im often at a loss too.....!!!

Krystiana is almost 6mos and she loves sitting on our knee, chatting, see mostly still likes to lie on the floor on her back (she gets grumpy if she's cramped up LOL). The girls recently started passing her stensils but she really likes them She's been in the JJ since 4mos, loves it, still not entirely sure what to do with it tho LOL. She's not showing any interest in moving/crawling/rolling etc either. Just likes company.

Oh yes I know she'd be different - I'm just looking for ideas really. She was awake for AGES today and we did everything I could think of and then had to repeat some activities as I had run out of ideas.
I've got a couple to try already from here (the bowl full of rattles etc and talking to her more when she's on my knee). So keep them coming!

Take her out for a walk in the pram, Han loved her JJ too, we hired an exersaucer from toy library for a while too. Han could sit early so she was quie easy - just sat her down with heaps of toys around!

Yip, exersaucer and lying under her playgym were Ashleigh's faves. She also liked to lie in her cot with her mobile going for a little while.

Oh yes she looves going out in the pram for a walk but the weather in Auckland today wasn't quite suitable
I'm quite keen on an exersaucer but the one I want won't be arriving for another 2 weeks - they do sound like a good option though

amy has lent us her exersaucer...Ella doesnt mind being in it for a short time but is so skinny that she just has to flop forward for now....but is getting used to being on her feet a little more...so imagine in a few weeks she might get the idea of it a little more.
We also bought that discovery dome (see Emmas shopping thread the other day) and are going to start using that when i tidy upstairs!!!
This afternoon i let her play with the cat.,..she patted her, and kissed her and the cat let her...just different experiences....I dont tend to leave her to her own devices much yet tho so we interact a lot at home. When out and about it is different and i love other people to interact with her....just keep on experimenting with different things. Also can you join a coffee group? I found mine good but bubbas are older (10 months plus) so way more ahead than Ella at this point.

LOL Kryssi can't sit up! She would like to though; trouble is that when she's propped in a sitting position with a toy, she drops it and can't get it back

Ashleigh was too small aswell so I just rolled up a towel and wrapped that around her. Kept her nice and upright

McKayla was a bubs that wanted to play from the beginning so sorry if some of this is not exactly age appropriate (this kid never followed the normal examples)
From beginning she liked bouncing on us. Saying all kinds of rhymes and using her body to act it out.
Playing rolling games on the floor to develop muscles as well.
Letting her lie on her tummy. Put a toy just out of reach and put your hands behind her feet so she can push herself forward while you give her stability. (this one did it from a month onwards, told you she was weird)
Different stuff out of the kitchen for her to feel with her hands. Just be careful if she doesnt have that much muscle control yet. (I think I might have a hard time with another baba if they dont tend to me like the sister this side. )
Playing music and singing songs. Making different facial expressions. Go lie down on the grass (okay realise this time of year might be to wet) and look up in the sky and the trees and show her stuff around her and talk with her.
Playing peek a boo should be really fun now. Start half hiding toys for her so she can pull it out herself and realise something can exist without you physically seeing it.
Start slow rough and tumble games with daddy. With him swinging her ect and let her be an aeroplane.
Okay do realise some stuff might be not age appropriate and didnt name some stuff she liked as I know she was my strange baby from the beginning. Hope it gives you a start.
