I visited a friend on Tuesday who's son is a week younger than Ashleigh (also born at 26 weeks). He started coughing a bit while I was there but seemed fine. Anyway I have just heard from her and he has been really sick since Wednesday and is now in hospital with pneumonia. I'm obviously really worried for him but also for Ashleigh - is pneumonia catchy? She hasn't displayed any symptoms of anything but just wanted to check!! I did google it but it hasn't really answered my question as I'm not sure what type he has.

From what Igoogled

IS PNEUMONIA CONTAGIOUS?
Yes it is, but it is LESS contagious than most people think. The cold virus that started the cough in the first place is contagious. But the pneumonia part of the illness down in the lungs is far less contagious. People who are exposed to someone with pneumonia may catch the normal cough and cold symptoms of the virus, but usually don't progress to pneumonia. The formation of the pneumonia is not determined by the particular cold virus or bacteria that the person has, but rather by each person's susceptibility in their own lungs.

Therefore, just because someone in your house or school has pneumonia and is on antibiotics, does NOT mean everyone else in the vicinity with a cough has pneumonia. Wait and see how the illness progresses before asking your doctor for antibiotics.

I have had pneumonia twice. the second time I was living in a flat filled with 13 people living in close quarters and living with Lewis too. he didn't get it from me, and no one in the flat caught it either. the first time was when i was nine months old.

Pepsi filled in the details I had, yes the virus/bug wihch started the pneumonia is infectious which may result in a cold/cough, but the pneumonia is the bodies reaction the the virus/bacteria and it does not mean that the same virus will cause the same reaction in everyone. Ashleigh may catch a cold from her friend but it does not mean it will automatically turn into pneumonia - her immune system will deal with it in a different way and may well fight it off compeltely with just cold/cough symptoms
She may not even get a cold, heres hoping that is the case
