Topic: Nap Naps - anyone tried them? Posted: 13 August 2007 at 2:24pm |
My son is 6mths old and I've had him in disposables. I really want to give cloths a go but the selection is mind boggling. I have friends with their own opinions but Id like more! 'Nap Naps' seem a good option as they are cost effective being a one-size fits all. But as I am planning on using them when number 2 comes along, I just cant imagine them on a newborn? Bulky as?
Has anyone tried 'Real Nappies'?
I have trialed Kushies/Kooshie but Im not that impressed with them. They seem very bulky with poor absorbtion (I have washed them a few times before use), but then I have nothing to compare them to. Sam also seems to be a heavy wetter.
Help!
Jess

Kushies = horrible (IMO)
Real nappies = cost effective and easy
Nap naps = Just my opinion, but I think there are better options.
Where do ya live? I'm sure there'd be someone around that'd bring over some MCN to show you?
And yeah, it does take a while to get your head around. Which is why it's best to see them! There are stores in Auckland and Christchurch and various agents etc. The Nappy Network has demo kits around the country too.
There is a run down of the types here
And welcome Jess!

BTW, I'd say pocket nappies are a good option at your sons age. They are a system where you stuff them with absorbancy but have the liner and the waterproofing already sorted in the "pocket"

My boy is 6 months tomorrow and we use a mix of Fuzzi's and Tweedles and the odd home made one by my mum. They are all great as I can make them as absorbant as I need (as he has a regular peeing pattern now) therefore not too bulky.

i had a nap nap but i didnt like it, it wasnt absorbant enough for my needs, and was far too bulky. the cover isnt very good either. but then i have a friend who loves them, so i gave her my one. it is all about personal taste - but i agree with nikki, there are better options out there than nap naps.

Nap naps do a great overnight fitted nappy... i tried nap naps and also found the cover not that good and even tho the naps are one size the covers arent and i found them very small fitting. as far as fitteds go they are quicker to dry than some as the soaker folds out and they come in some great colours. They do have trial packs so maybe you could buy one to try then onsell it if it doesnt work for you.

Thanks heaps everyone. Its interesting the conflicting opinions!
Both people I know with Nap Naps said they've never had leaks and really like them and not too bulky.
Pocket styles - Do any of them have cotton lining? I only want natural fibre against Sammy's bottom! I dont mind if the 'stuffers' are synthetic eg microfibre. I've also been told that microfibre can generate more heat? And not as good on sensitive skin? I like the idea of having the liners/stuffers tucked away and not loose on top of the nappy lining (unless a booster is required). Am I right in saying that they dont require a waterproof wrap? Lyla and Nikki, what brand do you use? Questions, questions, questions!
I am having a look at a friend's Nap Naps this week and will ring to get demos from some agents too. It sounds very much down to personal preference and best fit for bubs.

Well, my babe is out of naps now. I've tried a few different types but mainly used fuzzibunz, and more recently used Ecobubs wool pockets.
I have heard of some babies having a reaction to microfleece but it is very rare. (Mine has more of a reaction to the stuff in disposables than the fleece ) - and I haven't found she is too hot in the naps. I'm a big fan of air time for bums too... I think nappies generally make bums a little warmer, but I don't think this is a problem.
Natural fibres next to bums... hrrmmmm... Well NapNaps have cotton as I understand it, but it isn't a stay-dry layer so they are sitting in wetness. The fleece draws the moisture away so that it isn't sitting next to the skin. Some nappies use cotton velour, which is relatively stay-dry, tho not as much as fleece. Bamboo velour is also around the place too if you were looking at making nappies.
And yep, you are right - pockets don't need a cover. They already have a waterproof layer called PUL.
As far as bulkiness of napnaps goes, they are trim compared to old fashioned flat nappies but relatively bulky compared to new MCN systems... ya get me? They are a great nappy, I guess I'm just lazy and prefer my naps (mostly) assembled
I'd look into Hire Kits if I were you. I know Lyla had one. They give you the option of trialling quite a few types and brands over 6 weeks or so to get the hang of it and help you decide which type. I think ClothNappy.co.nz has details of hire kits.

Well, I made my decision. There was a set of Nap Naps on trade me that were near new that I won for half their value. I had a look at a friends first so I knew what I was buying. May have jumped the gun a bit but they are a great fit on Sam. They came with a microfleece liner which I have tried. Couldnt believe how dry Sams bum was!!! Better than disposables. I also have a natural fibre one from Nature Baby which are just as good.
Anyway, later on when I'm less impatient I will try some hire kits before the next bub comes along. Can always sell the nap naps. Please with my decision so far anyway.
Does the PUL outer stand up to all the washing? I've heard the all-in-ones tend to wear quicker or is that only if they are put in the dryer all the time?

You will find with the covers you wont need to wash them every time they are worn unless they get dirty. If you just air it out it should be fine for next time (provided you have more than one that is). Oh and careful when you hang them out - dont put the peg on the PUL inner cause it may mark it. I hang anything with velco by doing them up on the line so i dont even need pegs.
