Topic: Free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds Posted: 19 July 2006 at 7:33pm |
Heya ladies,
I just posted in the topic under Working for Families pay out but I thought I'd type up the information here (or go find something I can cut and paste) to let those who haven't yet recieved the details about the 20 hours free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds which comes in next July.
This is the info I recieved from creche.
- All 3 and 4 year old children attending licensed EC services will be entitle to access up to 20 hours free care and education.
- There will be a cap of 6 free hours per day to start with. In effect this means that a child attending a service for 8 hours a day/3 days a week will only recieve 18 hours free, whereas a child attending 4 hours a day/5 days will recieve the full 20 hours.
- Services will be able to charge whatever fees they choose outside the free entitlement and children under 3 will pay as they do now.
- This scheme is not income based. All 3 and 4 year olds will be better off.
- WINZ subsidies will still be available after the free hours have been used up.
- Free EC will cease when a child turns 5 years except under exceptional circumstances.

Hi Nikki
Just wondered. Do you use a Victoria University Creche? Thought you might as you were studying. Our kids are at Tui House and we just received info on the above

Yep, I use the student creche at Fairlie Terrace. I love it! Jean Sunko is fantastic
My friend Kelly works at Tui House part time. She always tells me about the kids there Get's some hilarious comments about "funny unnies" (One kid spotted her g-string)
Does that mean you or hubby are staff at Vic?

Hubby was doing a part time law degree and that is how we got a place there. We were originally waitlisted for the law school creche but got a place at Tui until a place came through but we loved Tui House so much we kept him there and now Alex is also there. Most of the kids parents are staff at Vic.
I like that although they have an under two's area and over two's area they are not separated so there is interaction with all the kids at stages during the day
Lawdy, I hope it was not Harry commenting on her undies but I'm sure she's use to it.

oooh exciting - wish that was in right now
until now we have been fully subsidised because of our income... which is all well and good, except my money i have been putting on top of my student loan of $150 a week (i know it has bumped up my student loan a heap but it pays the bills) that stops as of next week - as does my childcare subsidy. and heres the prob.. cos i can't get a job till at least a months time, which means about 6 weeks with no extra income coming in - but being expected to pay daycare now - so $300 a week more bills. and, it's just not gonna work. I figured out that we can survive with $27 over a week until i get a job - but that was not factoring in the childcare.
I know currently we are about $500 in credit there because we weren't always fully subsidised, but once the thresholds etc went up we have still kept paying that $40 a week anyway.... but hey - that will only really pay for a week and a half. I think my first paycheck won't be going towards much celebrating of any type.

If you take a break from Daycare until you get a job, will they not have a space for them anymore? Sorry am not up with how the whole thing works. Also you should prob still get something for daycare through the working for familys .

I was able to keep Andrew in Daycare while I was not working as I was in between jobs anf then I decided to study. You should be able to keep the subsidy as I know we did. Ask your daycare (which one you at?) if they can keep the space for a month until you go into fulltime work.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Hi Janine,
Work and Income allow 9 hours per week childcare subsidy in general that doesn't need qualifying with work or study. The hours per week increase with activity (work, study etc) up to 50 hours per week per child, but if you have a break imbetween study and working, you should definitely still qualify on the basis of the 9 hours. Have a chat to your local childcare co-ordinator through Work and Income. StudyLink don't administer childcare subsidies, so you'd be better off having a chat to them about what you could do in the mean time. (They usually only have the transitional payment when you are looking for work for 10 days between stopping one activity and starting another).
Good luck.

From the WINZ Casebook (MAP)...
Qualifications
A client may be able to receive assistance for subsidised childcare of up to 9 hours a week if:
* they are the principal caregiver of a dependent child
* they meet an income test
* the child is under 5 years old or
under 6 years old if the child is one for whom a Child Disability Allowance is paid or
aged 5 years old but not yet attending a school (Childcare Subsidy payable for 4 weeks after the child turns 5 years old)
* the child attends a licensed pre-school facility
* the child attends for at least 3 hours per week
* they are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (ie not be in New Zealand unlawfully or here on temporary permit) and
* generally be ordinarily resident in New Zealand
...the up to 50 hours per week subsidy requires the work activity etc. So, it may not cover all of the hours, but 9 hours subsidy per week per kiddie is better than none.

definately. The girls are booked in for 45 hours so 8 am till 5 pm, and if we were to change those hours in the meantime they could not keep places open for us to change back to them in 6 weeks time - they have a 2 yr waiting list. For ours we pay 50 weeks of the year regardless of attendance, holidays or sickness. HAve an appointment on tuesday so will see about it then

I'm sure they could make an allowance for you if you are job seeking. They seem to be able to swing heaps of things like that, providing you ask.
Good luck with your appointment and I hope they continue the subsidy, seems a bit rude not to.

The other sneaky(ish) thing you could do is ask for a letter from one of your lecturers/supervisors explaining that you still have a component of your course to complete (the 9 hours, just don't mention it is only 9 hours) and let WINZ know that the course has been extended until this component is completed. Strictly speaking, you need to be completing a 'Job Seeker Activity' to qualify for the up to 50 hours, but talk to the CCS Co-ordinator and let them know the situation. GOOD LUCK VIBES YOUR WAY!!!!
