I've had a bit of a search but couldn't come up with an answer, so...

Those who have used capsules, when did you move into a car seat? Is there a legal time for babies to stay in a rear-facing seat (6 months?) or is it until they outgrow the capsule?

Just wondering because we might get a capsule-buggy combo and then wouldn't want to have to buy a convertible carseat later too if the baby outgrows the capsule early. How young can they be in a standard carseat?

Phew, lots of questions - TIA

babies are supposed to stay rearfacing till 8 kilos, or 12 months. but the longer you leave them rearfacing the safer they are. i have no intention of turning jordis around anytime soon.

i never used a capsule, just had a birth to 36 months type carseat, and it is fine for us.

if you get a capsule, you will still have to get a carseat that will be able to go rearfacing, as baby could be out of it by 6 months or so, earlier if baby is big. you could look at hiring a capsule through plunket, and then spending the money on a good carseat for next.

I have had both my boys in a capsule. Andrew was in his till 8 months and Josh is still in it and will be for a while yet. I have a convertible carseat (that Andrew is still in) that once Josh is too big for the capsule I will put him into and keep it rearfacing for a while yet. CRS would be a good person to talk to as she is a carseat expert.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

With capsules there is a weight limit (sometimes depndent on the brand) but be aware there is also a lenght limit also - around 66cm. Although plunket would disagree on that comment (they pretty much only go by weight) but if you read the manufacs instructions it's in there (again can be dependent on brand)
The legal requirment is for a baby to rearward face until 6 months BUT it is reccommended to keep them rearward facing until 1 year (or as close as possible). That is where the convertible newborn to 18months carseats can come in if you decide to use a capsule at first.

tash out grew her capsual early. i moved her into a rear facing carseat at 5 months i think it was. the strapes in the capsual were just going over her shoulders and i read the instructions and she was just over the length recomendation. she was rear facing until11 months then when her feet were up against the back of the actual car seat we put her forward facing.

My Plunket nurse actually told me the gremlins were too long for their capsules lol, but by that stage I had already put them in their convertibles. I've turned them forward facing now, they will be one next weekend, but they do say the longer you can keep them rear facing the better.

Josh is over 70cm and still in the capsule. I feel a little safer with him in there. I am planning on moving him into the convertible, just have to get a booster seat for the big boy.

Thanks - I'm not any closer to making a decision yet, but that's certainly a lot of useful info to consider!

I'm also a big proponent of the convertible carseats. Hannah was in her capsule for about 6 months before I put her rearfacing and kept her that way until 12 months or so (memory loss)... I think it is VERY important to keep them rear facing as long as possible.

IMHO it's not worth buying a capsule (unless you get a good deal on a combo or whatever) as they are used for such a short time. Hire then invest in decent convertible is my recommendation

We have used a convertible car seat for James and will turn to forward facing after his birthday. For when we have the next baby I'm going to hire a capsule. The only thing I don't like about convertibles when their little is that the are a pain to get in and of the car all the time. But money wise are the cheaper way to go.

We managed to get a capsule really cheap and will be able to use it for our next baby but DS had outgrown the capsule by 3 months as he was too tall for it and hated being put in it. He doesnt mind going in his big carseaat though. We were going to skip the capsule all together, but I hadnt decided on which convertible I wanted so jumped at the capsule when we got it so cheap.

I think that it would be alot easier to hire if you really want to go the capsule route as they are not worth the expense they have on them to buy when you will most likely need a convertible as well.

I wouldn't buy a capsule, personally I don't think they are worth the money for the amount of time. I think all of them are til 9kg or 66cm long, which is an average 6-9mo. Briona outgrew hers at 6mos and Kryssi would have been even quicker if I still had it I turned Hannah and Briona forward facing at around 6mos (that's the legal thing). Kryssi is still happy rear-facing (probably because she is in sight of Briona next to her) so I'll keep her that way until her 1st bday or if her length makes her uncomfy.
