Topic: First Cold Posted: 24 February 2007 at 7:09pm |
Last night was a bit of a shock to the system, it felt like being back to when Alyssa was a newborn!. Usually she goes down to bed quickly around 8pm and then sleeps through until around 7am, however it took 1 1/2 hours to get her to sleep and then she woke twice at 1am and 3am. I couldn't figure out why she was suddenly being so difficult, then this morning I realised Alyssa has her very first cold - poor bubba.
She's actually pretty happy apart from a constant runny nose and possibly a sore throat if the fake cough is anything to go by?
Anyone have any tips on how to make things easier for babies when they are going through this?

If it's just sore throat and runny nose, I think all you can do is keep up the feeding (milk - I don't know if you bf or ff) and cuddles. But if she has a stuffy nose as well you can use baby Vicks, I'm not sure of it's exact name. She will probably sleep a lot more during the day which will help her immune system beat it.
Hope it goes quickly, even if only a cold being sick is no fun!

poor wee thing, colds are no fun, especially for a bubba. if her nose gets really blocked and she's having trouble sleeping because of it, you could find some really thick books and put them under the legs at the head of her cot to help raise her head a bit.
hope she beats it real quick.

Yeah, I second what Ella said - raise the head of her cot, it does help.
She's doing well if this is her first cold, my Ella got hers at 2 weeks as someone came over sick to visit us..

same here kat, mikey was 4 days old when he got his first cold. you'd think people would have the sense to stay away from a newborn if they're sick!

Ugh, I feel like a total zombie today..Alyssa's cold got progressively worse last night and she basically hasn't slept at all apart from maybe 10 minute bursts. She is very hot, although not hot enough for a trip to the A & E. I'm about to take her to the doctor soon though, although I don't know what they can really do?
Thanks ladies, I will try the cot tip tonight - I have tried steaming up the bathroom to help unblock her nose and it works great, but only temporarily. The minute I step out of the bathroom she's crying agan.

I don't have any tips to contribute, but I'm reading this for advice as Ella has her first cold too. I caught it off her and got a lovely fever to go with it for a while, but I don't think Ella's had a fever yet - she hasn't felt hot at all. If anyone else has some advice I'd love to hear it! Hope Alyssa gets well soon, Pepsi. What's baby vicks? And do you use it like normal Vicks? Or put it in a burner instead? Come to think of it - I'll go burn some Tea Tree oil in her room now, methinks.

Andie baby Vicks is in a blue and pink pottle and is available at Pak n Save. It's for kids 3mos+. The usual Vicks is for kids 2yrs+
In the meantime, putting some on your breast (so they inhale it when feeding) and some on a hanky tucked down a little at the head of the bed/mattress (so they won't grab it) helps.
Can't breathe properly? A few drops of saline solution or breastmilk up their nostrils can help loosen it all up. Beware it will make them choke lol.
Krystiana got the sniffles last night

Well, we took Alyssa to the doc and she confirmed it's a "very bad cold" and that her temp needed to be brought down immediately as it was too high. Since I had no luck getting her to keep the Pamol down, the doc tried giving some also, but she spewed again. In the end she had a suppository - yep, right up the bumbum! I was advised I will have to take her to the hospital if her fever gets worse, or she goes limp etc..
Anyway, it has been about 4 hours since the doc and she is screaming he head off right now. I have checked her temp which is still high but not enough to worry. I'm at my wits end because she is so tired from not sleeping all night (and so am I), yet she won't or can't sleep. God, if I can't handle things while she just has a cold I'd hate to see how I am with something more serious!

Also Dimetapp from Chemist is good, it helps clear there nose up, and makes them sleepy at the same time. It is the kids Dimetapp, and the chemist ppl can tell you all about it, I use it for Xanda. Alyssa should be old enough and heavy enough to have it. And like someone else said, saline drops up the nose are good.
You can also get something at the supermarket called Kavol I think, they are capsules that you cut open and put the liquid onto a hanky and then put hanky underneath cot sheets and it helps decongest them during the night.
Hope she gets better soon.
