Topic: ASB IVF assistance Posted: 22 November 2010 at 1:46pm |
Does anyone know any details about this? I'm just curious - we were going to start IVF but Jacob intervened , and it's such a big expense that any assistance for people that do have to go down that track would be good.
Anyone know what they're offering? Their website doesn't give a lot of details - I'm imagining it's a personal loan type scheme?
ETA that the add's slightly unrealistic, isn't it? Still, I guess it's just dramatic effect, and any help's a good thing

It's just a personal loan.
They make it sound like they are giving money away!

Wow just saw the add last night for the first time
ASB is really pulling the heart strings, even DH commented on it !
Do they have special interest rates for the loan?

Hmmm... interesting ad.
Wonder how that couple will afford the repayments on the loan and car with triplets to feed and clothe!
Colour me skeptical.

It's nothing new - it's just newly marketed. At Repromed they give you forms with ASB's logo on them to apply for the loan.
To show the ad with multiple children is giving such false hope - I have only heard about it, not seen it. Every specialist I have seen really frowns upon multiple births, especially with the over 37's!
IMO if you have your own home, borrowing the money against your home loan is far cheaper.
It's a real Catch22 that some of us have to borrow the money to pay to get pregnant, and then if successful we will go down to one income yet have another $10k or more added onto the combined debt. For us, it means having to throw every single possible cent into the mortgage in the next year if we are successful so we can try to not only pay back the extra $$$ borrowed, but to reduce the size of our overall debt to make repayments a bit lighter on the pocket while we are one income. (But YES it WILL be worth it!!!

Oon another note - in the papers yesterday I saw the bank is in trouble with the watchdog or whoever about the advert. I think about 8 complaints have been made about the advert.

Haven't seen the add, but saw it in the Sunday mag and they made it sound good and appealing like they were giving money away but of course banks are in it to make $$.

We're not with ASB but borrowed our first private cycle from our bank at the same rate as our mortgage. Our bank manager is lovely but I agree you should think hard about the debt especially with the outcome you are hoping for.

The advert is on www.morefm.co.nz today. I was 'interviewed' this morning when I rung up to voice my thoughts on the ad - I was a bit incensed that Si said that 'IVF is often unsuccessful' and that was the primary reason I called because that statement is quite frankly very misleading and NOT what people want to hear - people NEED hope, plus I personally know of more successful stories than non successful stories, as a lot of my friends have successfully had children through IVF! Plus I wanted to state that multiple pregnancies in women over 35 are very frowned upon as they increase the chance of miscarriage and health issues/birthing issues, and that ad shows a lady who IMO is over 35 and ends up with triplets - not to mention the amount of people who already think along the lines of 'pay for IVF and thus kill two birds with one stone and hope for twins'.

It does sound like they'll offer IVF customers a reduced interest rate on their average personal loans, which is good
