Hi

I need some help - my son is just about out of his capsule and we need to get him into a convertible seat.

We want something that rear faces for a bit longer than the standard 12 kg; but we also travel to Aussie a bit to see family so to save the hassle and price of hiring every time we go, we wanted something that is also legal to use over there (which I believe is AU/NZ 1754 - and includes the use of a tether bolt rather than ISOFIX or LATCH).

I didn't think I was asking the earth but having looked at a pile of info on the net I'm still horribly confused as to which product might actually work (and without costing a bomb - not sure we're in the market for a Radian or a Brio).

Anyone else had this problem and have a solution? Any help would be awesome!

Radian's are illegal over there, as Australia hasnt done testing on it yet so even tho its got a really good standard they wont accept them. Sorry I dont know of any that will work over there. Good luck

Radians are illegal over there - on the other hand, because of the safety advantages of ERF seats like them, there's a number of Aussie Mum's who import them and just use them. Apparently it's super super rare to get a ticket, cops only ever look at whether the kid is or isn't in a carseat.

I know I took ours over there when we visited - I did feel a bit bad about the illegal aspect (I don't like doing anything against the law, to be honest, even if I know there's no good reason except a bit of red tape), but thought it was the most sensible option really. That worked fine for us.

Have you thought of taking your own seat over with you? I take my radian (that I have here) every time I travel to Oz (if you're traveling with a child then it's not considered extra luggage). I know it's technically not legal but personally I know it's safe, it's fast to put in/take out and it means I can take our car to the airport and pop it straight in my parents car at the other end.

Sorry, don't know otherwise.

Hi - thanks for the thoughts. I asked a friend in Aussie and the real answer would be to buy one in Australia.

I'd love a Radian but can't afford one and we've decided Safe N Sound are the way to go. They can definitely be used in Aussie, so we can buy one here and take it with us.

They only rear face till 12 kg but actually that's most likely to be well over 1 yr of age, so we figure its the way to go!

I guess you have to ask yourself are you willing to compromise on safety for the ability to use a car seat in Aussie? Will you be hiring a car over there or would you be traveling with family? Could you purchase a 2nd hand car seat over there to store with family?
Also remember that sns car seats don't allow you to use the top slots for rear facing so your child may outgrow it height before weight.
