Topic: Maternity pads: which brand and how many? Posted: 30 April 2007 at 7:02pm |
The title says it all really! Which brand of maternity pads to people like the best, and how many should I buy?
Any other pearls of wisdom people want to give me about maternity pads?

LOL, how about don't bother!
I got 2 packs of 10 at the alarming price that they charge and only needed half a pack till my bleeding settled down on day 5 and I needed regular pads.

Wait and see if the hospital you deliver at provides them for you. At Palmy we get a pack of 10 and that lasted me 2 nights and 1 1/2 days. I had some left over from Andrew that I used and after that the bleeding had gone down to being able to use a regular pad.

Yea I used them at the hospital, took the rest of the pack home, and then went onto supers.

I used the hospital ones but still used a pack or two at home. I actually found the cheapest ones (that look like surf boards!) were great, thick and with adhesive on the back (Pams brand I think?). Didn't need the wings and the thickness was good cushioning
Sorry, TMI!
When I started feeling more human again I felt better switching to thinner pads with wings.

Ok, so i was the exception - i just kep on bleeding and bleeding, but then i usually have very long and very heavy AF anyway so maybe had something to do with it.
After usingup all the pads the hospital gave me - which is the same as becks said, about 2 packs.. those were used up in 2 days if that for me. I then found that libra goodnights were awesome for probably the first week, especially at night, but towards the end of that week, i was using the libra maternity ultra thins during the day. Libra invisible super is also really good too. I got i think 2 pack sof the goodnights second time around, and 2 packs of the libra maternity ultrathin, then just lots of normal packs of the super which i could use again once period came back anyway.
Like Mazzy said though, i found that the cushioning of the thicker ones like the libra goodnights, was kinda nice for the first few days, especially after i had paris and had stitches to contend with too, it lessened the "ouch" factor a little.

Def not ultra thins - the cheaper thicker ones are quite comfy. I think I used Libra once I was home but I was in hospital for 10 days and used their ones and found them OK.

With Maya I pinched a couple of packs from Birthcare before I left and that did me for a wee while, but I did bleed quite heavily for the first couple of weeks.
With the gremlins by the time I came home from Birthcare on day 4 the bleeding was pretty light and so I could have gotten away with just regular pad, but used the maternity ones coz I'd stocked up on them. I found the Kotex ones the best, but I don't know if you can get them here (I got them in Oz).

I used quite a few - but then changed everytime I went to the bathroom even when not needed as very paranoid about getting an infection. I also used a newborn nappy under the maternity 'surfboard' for the first couple of days - extra protection and padding (didn't need to change this though).
Probably have been through 7 packs of maternity? But this is partly because easier for hubby to find maternity pads then look for night/super ones at supermarket when I was running low. Also was given one pack at hospital (and used their nappies)

I stayed in hospital for 4 days so used their ones there, but still needed the maternity ones for another week or so once home. I have 3 packets of 10 this time plus some super ones. If I need more (surely not!!) I will have time to get DH to go get me some.

Lol!
I remember being right where you are at the moment; going WHAT THE?!? after our antenatal lady dropped that little gem on us at the last session. That, along with a mock timetable of a day with a newborn - I couldn't believe I was about to be spending 8 to ten hours a day feeding a baby! That's a whole work day!
I sent an email out to my non-preggy friends telling them all the crazy information that we never knew - freaked them out!
It sounds overwhelming, but it is all deal-able. I mean, we've all had periods before and in the end I loved the time I got to bond with DD breastfeeding.

I used the hospital ones for the 4days in hospital and the nurses there stashed some extras in my bag, once I ran out of them I went to Libra maternity liners, for a week then normal liners. I went through alot of liners due to my stitches as I was ver finatic about keeping them super clean, so I prob went throguh a pack in a few days and I stopped bleeding about 6wks after the birth.
It all depends on you and your body and your circumstances.

I agree with the others, my midwife gave me 4 packs of the hospital ones and they pretty much took me through the worse after that I just used the thin types, even the budget range from Pak n Sav were fine. I went crazy before bubba was born and bought about 10 packs thinking I'd have it for 6 weeks, but it only lasted 2, so wait if you can!

I recommend the thick, super, Budget brand. It was recommended to me by a parenting centre when I had my first baby. They were great. Good cushioning (an important thing when you're feeling somewhat sore). Just use two for a while, stuck together and overlapping. I foolishly tried a more expensive, maternity pad when I had my second baby - not nearly so good - so reverted to my favourite - Budget... I needed them for about 5 weeks after baby 2, and for about 3 weeks after baby 1.

Yeah the big cheap thick surfboard ones are great for when you are heavy bleeding. I used them for the entire time I bled (ones that birthcare provided) then bought them at the supermarket when I went through those. I kept using them even when it got lighter as they are really soft and I had stitches so liked the idea of having less friction and more padding down there!
I have bought 4 packs this time as I bled for quite a while with DD and I figure if its lighter this time and I don't use them all I can use them as overnights once AF comes back.

I went through heaps - heavy bleeding and also paranoid about infection with stitches. I also went through most of the ones I had bought before she was born due to rupture of membranes 76 hours before her birth . I thought the pams maternity ones were the best - and I did try a few differnt brands
