we are thinking sbout getting a car seat for DS who is nearly 5 months as he is hanging over the edgef his capsule and pushing off the backseat.
They are all so expensive especially because they are a nessesity.
I have been looking on TM but am unsure of car accidents and misusage. etc.
So whats the best brand for your bucks.

I'm a bit wary about buying things like that on TM too - just because you don't know the history.
If you want a slightly cheaper new carseat - we have a Cosco one which has been quite good. Think they are about $200. I don't think they have quite as much impact protection as safe & sound ones but they have a really high rear facing weight limit which means you can keep bubs rear facing for a long time.

Wasn't there somebody on here who works for the car seat safety people? Maybe someone can put her name here for sarahbetha to contact?

Sometimes baby factory has sales on car seats, so they might be worth checking out.

I think we have a safe and sound royale one, it has a recline function which is useful when in the rear facing position on long car journeys. We got it when cath was 6 months old and she's now 16 months and 80cm with a bit more room to grow. It has a bit of extra padding that can be taken out to accommodate your baby when it grows. i think it was $320?

Hiya,

Just a word on capsules - even though your DS's feet might be hanging over the edge of the capsule that is perfectly safe - it's when their head sticks out above the top of the capsule that it's too small. Of course there is the weight limit too, but there is no need to move out of a capsule if it's just because of the feet.

Believe it or not I still have a DD who is 11 months/10kg in a capsule!

I don't know if you have a Baby on the Move up where you are but find out. They rent a lot of car seats and that and they fit them to your car too. They maybe able to help with the best one to use too.

They have a website

I have a safe and sound....something. But it coverts - can be rear facing or used as a booster. It was $120 I think, through the Maori Health Service in Gisborne. Worth talking to some of the community services to see if they have subsidised car seat schemes like this. I think the seats retail for just over $270? ACC subsidized them I think

We just bought a second carseat as a spare for DH's car. I did abit of research and figured it was better to get a cheaper new seat (that meets safety standards) than a second hand well known brand.

We bought one new for $100 from Baby OnLine and were really happy with it. We got someone to fit it for free too from some car restraint place. Must post their details as they were so helpful and even came to our home.

Kabe I would love to know who installed your car seat, sounds like just what we need. Did they bolt your seat in?
My baby is in a Milano capsule at the moment and her feet are already kicking the back seat.
We also have a S&S Royale in the spare room waiting to be used, would like to get it put in properly if we can.

Kriss, I don't think they will fit the bolt (although can't be sure), but they can certainly check you have installed it correctly and if it's time to move up to the next size seat. I emailed them and they put me in touch with someone in our area. Was very straight forward! I've just noticed on their website that they tell you how to fit the bolt, or where to get it professionally fitted.

Here is their link NZ Child Restraints
