Topic: How often do you change your cloth nappy? Posted: 03 April 2011 at 1:28pm |
I have recently become a convert to MCN's but am not liking having to change my 8 month girl sometimes every hour, more often every 2 hours!! I only have a small supply at the moment and have been trialing baby first and pea pods, needless to say i'm not impressed with either as unless i change often i just get leaks and then its a whole other load of clothes in the wash!
BUT.... i have done some further research (that is reading all the cloth nappy OHbaby forums and have fallen in love with itti bitti's so I plan on buying some of the d'lish SIO's next. If anyone uses itti's or any other CN how often do you have to change? I hate my baby going for a nap with a wet nappy on so at this stage i put a clean one on her for a nap, then change again when she gets up and then during that awake time i'll change at least once again (and these days shes only up for 2 -3 hours!) Do i sound crazy or what? I really am against going back to disposables but man they did hold a tonne more. Strange for someone who isn't having the best CN experience to be addicted and wanting to carry on eh!! What are everyones thoughts?
Also girls if disposable liners are flushable does anyone think wipes are flushable as well? I'm on town supply. Cool, thanks and look forward to the chats :)

If your nappies are brand new, how many times have they been pre-washed? I found soaking in plain water for about 24 hours helped with their absorbancy.
On the ittis again if you buy new you will need to do the soaking/washing thing before they become truly absorbant then should last 2-4 hours.
I find with our Itti Tuttos we change when up from nap, and only if she is up for more than 2 hours do we change her nappy again before a nap. Most days this works really well, but sometimes I think she has just held onto a BIG wee and she just floods the nappy, it comes out over the top(tummy) so no leaks at the legs. And or she has had a really long nap.
I found the baby first don't last as long on DD I just think plain microfibre with no more absorbant material behind it just isn't enough. I've never tried peapods so can't comment on them!
The itti SIOs not quite as absorbant as the tuttos BUT more absorbant and quicker drying than the AIOs.

wipes generally arent flushable - except maybe the wiggles ones that are more for toilet training... the nappy will last longer if it has more to absorb the wees. so if you only have one peapod insert in the nappy then no it wont hold much.

I change my 8 month old DS when he gets up from a nap and then just before I put him down again (unless he has a really short nap) so we are going between 2-3 hours for each MCN. I use mainly homemade pockets, but have a couple of peapods as well. With the peapods I do add an extra trifold microfibre insert to the bamboo one that came with them. I seem to get a few more leaks on the peapods around the legs, but my fellow has got skinny thighs, and the peapods are wide through the crutch so sometimes I find it hard to get the inserts right to the edges. I had one Babyfirst but never really worked for us so I just used the pad bits in my pockets.
Actually that is one thing to make sure you are doing - the inserts need to be touching right to the side of the nappy otherwise the moisture will wick through to the PUL and onto their clothes.
Edited to add that the inserts are not usually completely soaked when I change him, however the front half is (I'm guessing because he a boy) and if I leave it longer I will get leaks over the top. Might last longer with a girl??

We often only change when she gets up from a sleep. We'll check her nappy before she goes down for a sleep but will only change it if it's wet to touch (usually aren't, we use flushable liners and they stay dry) or if it's dirty. Often when she's awake she has no nappy on anyway, so usually the fresh nappy goes on just before we put her down for a sleep.
So we are only going through about 6 nappies a day at the mo. Even when she was littler it wasn't that many - maybe 8 to 10, with a nappy change overnight when she was still waking for feeds.
We do go through lots of flat nappies when she's on the floor with nappy off though!

Depends on the nappy here - i have some that last 2 hours tops, others that will go 3-4 hours and some cheapies that have gone 6 hours before changing, and could possibly have gone longer. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE NAPPIES I HAVE THAT ARE FOR NIGHT
And our girl can be a heavy wetter.
Our ittis go 2-4 hours
But depending on what you are using now, maybe add another insert?

I used to have to change at least every 2 hours or we'd get leaks but as DS has gotten older and having less bottles I can go 2-3 hours, sometimes a bit longer in the afternoon if I'm lucky as he's probably not drinking as much. I think now that he's super active and barely sits still it helps as when he was small and spent a lot of time sitting or laying we had loads of leaks and I nearly gave up on cloth.
When he was on 2-3 naps I'd usually change before and after naps and in between if necessary (eg poos).
I don't use AIOs anymore but I bought boosters and always used those and it made a big difference. Might be worth getting some of those to add into your SIOs too just to make them last a bit longer.
I think peapods need to be washed quite a few times to get maximum absorbency? I've only got one and I mainly use it as a short time at home nappy as I never found it worked or fit as well as itti bittis.

DD went through a stage I think at the same age where she wee'd constantly, her nappies would be soaked after 2hrs so I added an extra insert.
I found the peapod I had fine. The one insert would last quite a few hours.
Now with her couple of ittis and the joel-eze she has we go the same amount of time, so I normally do a change when she wakes then one just before she goes down for a nap that can be up to 5hrs in a nappy then depending how wet she is a change after her nap then a change at bedtime so maybe 4-5 nappies a day. DD has only had one nap since just before her first bday from memory. Try getting some more inserts perhaps, or buy some hemp or bamboo and make some, I haven't even hemmed the hemp I have its fine.
I do agree with a PP that said it may be because of the insert, peapods are bamboo from memory and I think I washed mine 6times before I even tried it on DD they become more absorbent as you use them

I change my 16 month olds roughly every 3 hours or less if I see he has done a poo.
also usually change just before we go out even if I put him in a clean nappy only an hour before hand

Ive been using the babyfirst brand and they work great. when she goes down for her naps (and nights if shes had poos in day) ill use disp since they hold more. Theres a service you can use that takes the nappies and recycles them into a sort of compost i think it is. It costs but i dont think that much really. Its all iv heard about it when i move to a proper house ill fully be doing that if iv the mulla.

I have Itti SIO's for my girls, and I change them 3 - 3.5 hourly.
I got caught out recently and the nappies were on for just over 4 hours, one baby had a small leak out the top on her tummy.
And Silk do flushable wipes (you can get them from the supermarket)

OMG!
I'm a newbie on here & would like to convert from disposables to MCN. I have a few Itti Bittis to trial that I've had for awhile & too freaked out to try. Recommended by a few people who use them. I'm determine to use as I would like to save some moolah for our household.
I shall read on in this thread. Very informative & great tips

MM2010, Cloth Nappy week is coming up, 16-22 May. There are usually things happening in the main centres, so you could find more information and get help then. There is a Cloth Nappy Week Facebook page set up, where you'd be able to find out more.
Good luck, and once you get them figured out, MCNs are very addictive!
