Topic: Newborn Naps Posted: 18 November 2010 at 1:08pm |
I am wanting to go with cloth right from newborn, even in hospital if possible, I have a good collection of various MCNs from sized to OSFA and am fairly happy I've worked out what I like and hopefully my wee boy will agree
I'm just concerned about the initial few weeks when it seems hard to fit a newborn bubba. I've heard about prefolds (but what ARE they??), snappies, covers, old fashioned cloth... I'm confused as to what would be best especially if bubs is small.
Can anyone shed light (in a very clear idiot-proof way!!) on options for the littlies. maybe a site with pics to explain??

Hi MerlinFluff
I have to say I was quite overwhelmed before bubs came along with the whole MCN thing.
Once you have baby you will find it all makes sense, and you'll find what works best for you and your baby
I had small prefolds with small covers for my newborn, although I ended up not using them full time till he was about 4-6weeks as it was a bit much to deal with. (next baby I think I'd be better prepared to start at day 3)
Check out snazzipants website. click produts, prefolds.
It shows you how they go on, and what a snappy is.
Lots of people swear by old fashioned cloths, but I never tried them so can't coment. (they use old fashioned cloths instead of prefolds)
I prefered prefolds and covers for newborn, as you are changing them quite a bit. You can reuse the cover (air between uses) to save on washing. And velcro is great as it give a really good fit. I found snaps a little difficult at that age esp if they didn't have leg snaps. I couldn't get a perfect fit and the nappies would leak.
So anyways, hope that helps and I haven't confused you more.

MF I'll take some photos for you of the prefolds and how they go on the kidlet tomorrow (attached to the pump at the moment). But as Janini said, if you go to the snazzipant site I think they have photos as well.
Basically they're just a rectangle of several layers of cottony material. They make them so they're thicker in the middle (more layers). You can just fold them into 3 then lay them in a waterproof cover that velcro's up at the front or do a flashy fold with a snappy (instead of a safety pin) and use a pull up cover like an old fashioned pilcher. You don't have to wash the covers every time, you can just air them out provided they don't get poo on them.
I used prefolds as my main system for smalls. Just used to fold them in 3 and lay them in a bummi cover that velcro'd up at the front. Very reliable, easy to add boosters when needed (eg at night) and a cheap (ish) way into cloth nappies. Although they're bulkier than lots of the other types. It certainly worked fine for us. We didn't start using them though until Kiara was 3kg so we had about a month I think in sposies but haven't used one since.
Oh, I just remembered I have a photo of Kiara when I first put her in them....now where is it....oh yes, here it is. It's a dreadful photo of her and she was only 2.3kg in this shot so even the smalls looked massive on her.

That was *really* helpful guys, especially the snazzipants site :) wow thesaff, what a wee babe you had, little premmie. I'm suprised you managed to contain explosions as she seems to have no chubb on her thinghs!!
I'd love to see pics of you putting a prefold on the little girl!!!
Do you both recommend Bummies as the wrap or are all wraps fairly similar?

Yeah, there was no chub on my girl. That shot was my first go in the cloths but she was still too small. I think it was another couple of weeks that I used them full time.
Okay, here's a series of shots of the way I use prefolds. It looks easy because it is!
She's just gone up into the mediums so they look pretty bulky on her, although they are a bit of a bulky system. But because of that I found that for night time I could add heaps of boosters to make the nappy last longer.
I used bummi's super brite covers mostly in the smalls. They have a double layer of elastic at the leg to prevent leaks. I NEVER had a leak with them no matter how big the wee or poosplosion. I also used the standard bummi's wraps and they were good but I got the odd leak out the leg - although as you can see my girl is still lean. I'm sure other brands would also be fine but I never tried any other ones.
I should add that friends swear by the snappy/whisper wrap combination, particularly to catch poo but it looked way too complicated for me during the night and my BF would NEVER have worked it out.

Hope that helps.
ETA: I just had to add a nice photo of Kiara since those ones (particularly the prem one) were not very flattering on her.

I used bummis super brites and whisper wraps, and for the same reason as thesaff preferred the super brites because of the double leg gusset. I too never had any leaks!
I also used a thirsties duo wrap and that was good as well, just a slightly smaller fit.

Oh thesaff, Kiara is ADORABLE!!! I can't believe it's the same wee girl as in the premmie pic, so bright and beautiful *cluckcluck*
... lol... on to naps. That was REALLY useful. I've since bought 6 bamboo velour prefolds, organic cotton prefolds, a stack of secondhand prefolds and some trifolds. Also several NB sized covers secondhand from TNN members. I want to get some super brites out of my hubbies next paycheck lol
You guys convined me it's the way to go for the newborns! Then I'll use the prefolds etc for stuffing a bunch of second hand naps I've bought later on.
Cheap? Me? lol. I like recycle/re use!
I'm getting hopelessly addicted to cloth nappies.

Merlin- My DD grew out of the NB size covers at about 2 weeks old, I reccomend getting some smalls as well, she then grew out of those at 6 weeks, and we went onto pockets. Welcome to the cloth love family, one day you will look at your stash and think 'how on earth did I get so many?'

the answer to the "how on earth you got so many" is the internet!! Trademe in particular is bad lol.
For my next I'll prolly just buy some small covers and use the good ol flats I still have (which usually get used as bibs, spill cloths etc)
For DD we used sposies for the first 4 weeks or so then straight into OSFA but she was a big baby with chubby thighs (really chubby!).
Actually I'm thinking of getting small SIO ittis (I only have medium and large), and using them as a cover with a flat inside, I know it works with medium :D
This is how chubby her thighs were and why when we did put her in cloth they fit so well:

i used small snappied prefolds on eden in the hospital after she was born and also i used the flats the hospital supplied. the best thing about using the flats was the hospital washed them all. i did have a few fitteds that got from TM too - they were little newborn ones and so cute and small! i think there are pics of eden in the gallery wearing her gorgoeus fitteds and prefolds in the hospital. might take a bit to search for them though cause she is coming up 3 next march! eek!
