Topic: Inserts + staining Posted: 09 February 2011 at 9:22pm |
Hey there
Noticing that some of our inserts are becoming quite stained - i think this happens when DH encounters a poopy nappy as he tends to scrape most to loo, then wet the nappy/insert trying to clean it (even tho ive told him this is not needed). Sunlight does not appear to be helping - nor has repeated washes, and while i know its no bother (especially as this hides inside a pocket) it annoys me.
Are you allowed to soak inserts in bleach/ or nappysan?
Or any other ideas?

I'm not sure what the 'rules' are but I have always soak my inserts (microfibre and hemp) in a bucket of water and a few drops of tea tree oil. Just because I can't stand the smell of them if they're dry pailed! They look fine, no stains at all.

I've always thought that they say to avoid napisan/sard etc products more for the outers, especially PUL etc as it eats at it. I would think the inserts being plain cloth of whatever sort would be fine to be soaked from time to time.

depends what they are... artificial fibres like microfibre should be ok. natural fibres (bamboo, cotton) don't really like constant chemical treatment but I guess a once off would be ok...?
ETA: have you tried vinegar & lemon juice, and then a good dose of sun?

yes, i aggree that vinegar is damaging bamboo.
i used to do (only occasional vinegar/baking soda wash) and now i m noticing breaking in the bamboo fibre... creating sort of cracks in the fabric.... so better stay clear from vinegar.
also, i d warn from a tree tree oil in a rince, last week,i tried this with my ittis (apparently it disinfects and deodorises naps) and after the wash i had a blue colour leak form a blue itti bitti cover in my wash....not too bad on itti bitti sio but terrible on bitti boos!!! and now can t get rid of this. ...
any one had similar experience?
anyway, just be causios with the amounts or teetree (i used cca 5 drops only)...
so you stash doesnt get damaged.

From what ive heard soaking inserts and liners in nappisan occasionally is 100% fine. Like others have said id tend to avoid soaking bamboo or hemp inserts (except maybe a one off if they got really bad) but microfibre, microfleece (liners) and cotton prefolds should be fine.
Defo not covers tho, PUL doesnt like nappisan!
Our mums and grandmothers used to soak our cotton flat naps everytime in nappisan and they lasted for years!

yeah i have a mix, some are bamboo - but most are those cheapuy ones, which i think are cotton.
Ah well might give the worst ones a go, and see what happens :) But you're right, im not interested in any kind of cover, theyre all in great nik, just the inserts. Just wanted to check i wasnt about to stuff anything up LOL
i do tend to use drops of tea tree oil in my machine which helps lose the ammonia smell - i love it!

mealz - we only use about a tablespoon - which was recommended to me for a rinse - I haven't noticed any deterioration in the bamboo nappies but we haven't had them that long...

My bad- have been soaking pocket nappys and inserts every day in ecostore napisan stuff,.... have used they same nappy on 2 kids now and they are fine. One or 2 of the honeychild pockets are getting stretching around the domes but I think thats more from being pulled tight over all the night nappy stuffing I use in them!
