Topic: AF after m/c Posted: 10 July 2007 at 2:09pm |
Does anyone know how long after a m/c your AF should return, and is it after the bleeding stops, or your hcg levels are back to 0? My m/c was kind of long - 2 weeks of brown blood, then a week of red blood, then was given a tablet to move things along so heavy bleeding for 4 days then it stopped. Now, 37 days after the first day of brown blood, my hcg level is still at 5, and I'm wondering when my AF will actually be back...

According to my doc, sometimes you can have a few months break like after a baby - up to 6mos I guess that means, since you're not bf. For me I had 2 weeks of m/c then my next AF came at the 5 week mark and was another 2 weeks (and cramping ugh). My cycle was still off at that point because I conceived Krystiana about 4 weeks after that AF starting. Confusing!

Mine came back pretty much 26 days after the d and c which was a normal cycle length for me.
Your hCG levels do need have droppped for AF to return but anything <5 is considered a negative result, so if your last test showed them at 5 and they are dropping there's no reason why AF would stay away. But some women find it takes their body a couple of months to sort itself out, others (like me) have a normal cycle almost immediately after their m/c.
Best of luck Kate, hope things settle for you soon

Hi minik8e, my AF arrived pretty much a month (+ a few days) after my D&C, but as every situation is different, they say AF 6-8 weeks from the op is to be expected...

Other than busymum, did any of you have longer than normal AFs after your m/c? I realise I'm not your standard case, having a m/c, then LLETZ treatment and a laporoscopy, but I got my AF back on 21 July, it went on till 28 July, 29 July was nothing, 30 July was spotting again and now it's back to vicious horrible full-on AF. And it hurts, and I'm grumpy and I feel like crying all the time. It just simply bites and I feel like curling up into a ball and bugger the world.

Does anyone know when your hcg levels should drop off and be less than 5 after a D&C the Drs where I live arent very good, hence why I go to auckland to see my old Dr for anything other than a cold! anyway I went to the Drs here yesterday for my cold and also asked (2 weeks post D&C) if she could do a hormone blood test to check if everything was going back ok etc she pretty much laughed at me and didnt do it!

My hcg levels dropped down to 2 (from 28) over the space of 6 weeks. They had gone down to 5 after 5 weeks.

They wouldn't usually do a blood test, I had one as I had testing done on the tissue collected during the d and c which identified some abnormal tissue that may have been a partial molar pregnancy so they wanted to ensure that my levels returned to normal.

I had to get my levels checked weekly as they weren't sure whether it was an ectopic, partial molar, or what the heck was going on, as my levels weren't actually going down in the normal manner after a miscarriage. Plus I was booked in for surgery where my hcg levels had to be lower than 2 prior to the surgery.
