This is getting stupid!

Have spoken to LLL and am following their advice - which was to feed up to 8hrs only from one side then swap with only minimal expressing on the other side just to relieve pressure. Also am really stretching a feed out and burping frequently. And i start DS sucking and right about the point where i get a let down he chokes it comes out his nose (and he battles bravely onwards) i pull him off and spray madly into a cloth until the foot long squirts have receeded then put him back on.

But its not working! Its been a week, am i being impatient? I was told it should make a noticeable difference in two or three days.

The 8rs is roughly 3 day feeds or 2 night feeds for DS and the breast is still not emptied after three feeds or at night when there is a longer gap it has time to fill up again.

The poor neglected side engores to the point where there is kind of a moat around the nipple as breast swells up builds up kind of a wall around the areola.

On the odd occassion DS throws in a longer then usual sleep i get solid to the armpits and wake in pain and sit around dribbling into a cloth desperate for him to wake and suck the pressure out!

More importantly though, poor DS chokes and gasps and squirms while feeding (but doesnt let go, he's a battler!) it sounds like i'm drowning him as he makes desperate gasps for air between gulps. His poo's are runnier then they should be and occasionally frothy. He's had three episodes of sore tummys so far which are concluded to be caused by too much foremilk or too much milk in general. And he is very very windy.

Sorry for the novel - does anyone have any thoughts other then what i'm already trying? I am beginning to wonder if i will need medication to calm it down - my doctor has offered but i refused thinking i could combat it naturally..

I had a mad oversupply for the first 3ish months... Nothing stopped it except growth spurts tbh! My boobs were B cup pre birth and DD (large) when milk came in. They settled down a bit after 3 months but wasn't until 6 months things sorted themselves out! I had a horribly forceful letdown too and all I can recommend it just getting a bottle or something (if you want to save the milk) or stand over the sink and express enough to relieve pressure OR express the letdown and leave it at that. I still get engorged every now and then but it's not as bad as the first 3 months! I had to sleep on towel and change my breast pads every 30 mins etc... Milk just poured out...

i dont see that doing only one side a day would help in any way... not with engorgement thats for sure. i would personally only ever hand express to relieve pressure. Maybe you could try to hand express a bit before the feed instead of getting him to do it. I know that lots of people too have had help from the kellymom website when it comes to breastfeeding issues.

the link is to the kellymom site and the section of forceful letdown and oversupply. i just read it and it had some good ideas.

I had a really fast let down. I am guessing some of the issues are the same...basically as soon as they started sucking, they'd get a massive hit in the back of their throats and start pulling off and spluttering.   What I did was....
1. fed with me leaning back in a chair and them slightly upright.
2. let them suck till I felt the let down, then I would take them off and release a little into the towel and then put them back on again.

That seemed to fix most of it. Hope some of that helps.

I also dont fully get the reasoning for going on one boob for so long...is that to reduce the demand and therefore supply?

Hold in there...eventually their suck gets strong enough that they can cope...then they get really annoyed when its not there the second they want it

Yes i think the idea is to let the body know that you don't need that much and also to fully drain that breast and ensure bubs gets enough hindmilk. I used to feed him in a sitting up hold must get back to that (got lazy, easier to sleep at night while cradling!)

Thanks for the link Bizzy will check it out now :)

High9 - 6 months . i guess the bright side is we are 1/3 there!

I had the same issue with DD, I had a very good supply and my boobs would be SO full before a feed that as soon as the breast pad was removed I would squirt milk everywhere across the room and she would get a face full of milk, she would latch on and my let down was very strong(ouch!) and she would choke and splutter on it.

So I would sit leaning back, I started putting a flat cloth nappy over my boob to catch the spray and then hand expressing a bit off so the let down would happen before she latched, then once the milk was just coming out lke normal Id latch her on and away we went! She'd be done feeding in 5 mins sometimes and she got heaps of milk! she gained excellent weight as a newborn, yay mummys milk!

Also, nzpiper gave me the idea of leaning back and it really works!
